I Love Fried Hokkien Mee3 months ago

Tried Mian Wang 1971 today. The prawns, sotong and pork belly were all good. Solid prawn stock and nice wok-hey, you can taste the effort. The sambal belacan was too spicy. I understand that some people like it spicy, but when the sambal belacan is blasting that much heat, it actually works against the dish. You lose the sweetness of the prawn stock and the wok-hey flavour gets buried under all that spice. The pork lard also burnt, not the golden brown crispy kind. Honestly this shouldn't even be served to customers. Burnt lard just spoils the whole dish, no matter how good the rest is. Sambal belacan should complement the FHM, not overpower it. A good chilli enhances the dish without drowning out what's already good about the ingredients. Hope they can tune down the spiciness a little and get that lard crisping just right. This stall clearly has the fundamentals, just need to fine-tune the balance.

This place actually deserves a hugher review if not for the location. 10mins walk away from gombak mrt, in a neighbourhood. The hokkien mee has wok hey, quite a lot of egg and pork lard is crispy and sufficient. Portion is quite small for $5, the cheapest, with 2 prawns. They also have $6 & $10 for the plain hokkien mee. I say plain because they also sell woth salted egg sotong and other types of meat/seafood as variations, starting from $8. Can use cdc. No queue on a sun afternoon at 2pm. Aunt is very friendly, wait is about 5mins only for the food. Drop by if you are in the area. Takeaway need to add 20cents.

I always want to try the original taste of the food I am having before I mix the squeezed lime juice and chilli in or in this case, taste the braised pork. So in the beginning, the taste of the noodle was in acceptable range, then I start to try the braised pork which was quite salty for my liking since no rice to eat with, but I just continue to eat, placing the used lime on the lettuce and oh my when I finish the food, I usually might settle my greens too, and the lime taste added a nice zest to the lettuce that seemingly helped to balance the richness(解膩). The braised pork though the saltiness might be a little overpowering, it really compliments my struggles to have a satiating meal as I always go hungry easily just having carbs, so I hope more hokkien mee stall can have side items like them too, well done!

Very good food! I never had hokkien mee with so many variation of toppings and the tastes really authentic. Portion is big and worth the price!

OK, i don't stay in the west, so I try my best to cover the FHKM places when in the vicinity. Mian Wang has been on the radar, after successful trials at Neighborwok and even Born HKM (but not Shiok at Beauty World). Today's portion is a small FHKM plus salted egg calamari at $8. And unfortunately, the add-on was better than the main. For a start, I don't expect wok hei, and there wasn't, but a FHKM must at least have heat. It had parts that was lukewarm.. which must simply be a result of laziness or a rushed job (but it was 1:20pm on a Saturday and there was no queue). When ordering, I already noticed that a portion of FHKM was already cooked and set a side, which is normal for many FHKM stalls, but those will usually go into the main wok for frying again. So, I assume that mine came from that portion, and the chef did not give it enough time for the heat to infuse, and had it served quickly. I don't buy this. I find this disrespectful. The flavor weren't great anyhow, so I won't say any more. The lady who took the order was nice, cheerful and accommodating, and I am sure they have their own strong following, so, I hope this is just a one off. But I won't be back.
