Visited after seeing that it is the one remaining Hakka eatery in Singapore and we were keen to try authentic, traditional Hakka dishes. Perhaps it takes a true Hakka to appreciate the food and maybe not being one ourselves, we can’t say we enjoyed the food much. Most of the dishes except the Mei Cai Kou Rou were rather bland - the white radish meat balls being the prime example. The abacus seeds were made primarily with yam and while it was understandably less springy, it also lacked the fragrance of fried yam. Would have liked to try their Hakka Yong Tau Foo but it was not available during lunch service. Overall, I am glad that we got to at least try Hakka cuisine in such a traditional establishment. And enough people seem to enjoy their food but regretfully, we won’t be one of them.
View on GoogleBeen wanting to return to this old school Hakka restaurant for more than a decade, having been there when it was still at Maxwell. Glad to see the boss still active. The current menu has fewer items than previously. We ordered the set for 6 $80, added pig stomach soup (medium $15) and leafy lettuce with anchovies (medium $15) and 2pcs of stuffed tofu. The yam abacus was a hit with us, very fragrant with the cuttlefish crisps. Vegetables was delicious too and generous portion. Stuffed tofu and salt chicken were okay. The preserved vegetables with meat was a bit muted. The boss surprised us with a 2nd bowl of soup, maybe he noticed that the medium portion was not enough for the 8 of us and the 2nd portion was a much better version of the pig stomach soup - more peppery and more pieces of stomach 🤭 Overall, it was a hearty meal with zichar prices.
View on GoogleA no-frill eatery nestled in Upper Thomson, serving up authentic Hakka dishes like signature Hakka abacus, salted steamed chicken and yong tau foo. The 4-person set meal also came with complimentary fried Hakka noodles that came with nice wok hei (charred/smoky) ‘flavour’! For those who prefer the typical peppery pig stomach soup, can give their version a miss as it was not in that style. Otherwise, this is a very decent Hakka restaurant that is worth a try (no service charge too).
View on GoogleThe service staff is super friendly and welcoming. Even gave free green bean soup after the dinner. The whole vibes of the shop even though not crowded, is really cosy. Most dishes not too bad. Yummy abacus! The mushroom v good!
View on GoogleAuthentic Hakka food with generous serving and warm hospitality. Their food are homemade dishes that will warm the cockles of your heart. The boss treats customers like friends and ensures that they are well taken care of. Would recommend making reservations on weekend as they would be packed.
