Came on a Sunday night for dinner with high expectations from the reviews I’ve seen, but was very disappointed with the food, ordered pork and chicken skewers, the pork belly skewers came with an overpowering porky flavour. The Chicken skewer with miso coating was one of the saltiest dish I’ve ever tasted. The worst was the wait for a dish that never came, the soft shell crab maki. Waited for a good 30 mins, and apparently it was served to the wrong table and we had to wait for at least another 35 mins for the kitchen to remake it, when there isn’t much of a dinner crowd. When it finally arrive, the dish wasn’t even hot, or at minimum lukewarm. The dish was cold. Ever eaten cold fried food? Yea it was unpleasant. Price point for this quality and standard is on the higher side. So it was quite a disappointing dinner, wouldn’t Recommend. There are better izakaya nearby.
View on GoogleThis place is a gem sandwiched between the famous Beach Road Prawn noodles and Alfono pasta shop. But let me tell you it’s value for money and the food is really good. Step into a nicely decorated Japanese-feel eatery with a wide selection of grilled food. The flavours are intense, the sauces are sweet and savoury with a hint of spice and well-balanced with their selection of drinks. We ordered a bunch of skewers and their signature clams and rice bowl.
View on GoogleA truly immersive experience! From the moment I walked in, I was soaked in the Japanese atmosphere. The restaurant was well decorated with beautiful Japanese umbrellas and soft Japanese music playing in the background. The service was also excellent. The staff were polite and attentive, always asking before clearing empty plates and making sure that our needs were taken care of. This added to the authentic Japanese dining experience. But the real star of the show was the food. It was authentic and truly delicious. Each dish was well presented and the flavors were just amazing. It was obvious that a lot of care and attention had been taken to ensure that each dish was perfect. Overall, I would highly recommend this Japanese restaurant to anyone looking for an authentic and immersive dining experience. The atmosphere, service, and food were all top-notch and I cannot wait to go back and try more of their dishes!
View on GoogleA lively atmosphere which is modelled after Japanese retro and charm, serving a wide variety of bites including classics and fusion takes. Food was generally flavourful and served with presentation in mind; the fried dishes being not too oily. I've had better garlic fried rice - this was rather bitter, which suggests the garlic was unfortunately over-fried. What should have been a highlight - Bara Chirashi - was unfortunately a disappointment; the presentation masks the unusual fishy smell that suggests not very fresh sashimi being used. However, the Oyakodon was definitely the star of the night: it was piping hot, yet I couldn't help but wolf down the mix of sweet onions, tender chicken and fluffy eggs. Service was decent, but otherwise average for a local fare. (Take note that the original Box n Sticks is at Bugis, which prompted me to visit this newer outlet to compare.) Would recommend a try, but perhaps stick to the cooked foods and you should not go too wrong. 4.3 / 5
View on GoogleWe were craving some Japanese food, and Box n Sticks popped up on Google close to our place. Got a reservation for 2 on a weekend evening. Ordered kushiyaki chicken Yakitori & Kushiyaki pork to go with Sawanotsuru sake. Proved to be a good combination. The buta kakuni buns are enhanced with the sauce it is served with. Found the potato salad nice, but a bit too cold for our liking. Would have preferred it mashed instead of sliced into squares. Finished with the sumptuous spicy aburi seafood maki. Nice interiors and ambience. Service is friendly and quick. Would visit again!
