The gallery houses over 2,000 botanical artworks, including botanical illustrations, watercolours, scientific botanical plates, sketches, and photography. These works are not only beautiful pieces of art but also valuable scientific and historical records, perfectly demonstrating the connection between art and botany. The gallery is located in Gallop House No. 7 (Inverturret), a beautifully preserved colonial residence built in 1906 and designed by renowned architect Regent Alfred John Bidwell. Its high ceilings, timber floors, large windows, and natural ventilation showcase the brilliance of tropical colonial architecture. If you have time, be sure to read the historical displays throughout the gallery. They offer wonderful insight into the Singapore Botanic Gardens, established in 1859, its contribution to the rubber industry across Southeast Asia, and its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. Many visitors also don’t realise that this building served as the official residence of the French representative, and later the French Ambassador, from 1939 to 1999. Don’t miss the beautiful Oculus Window. “Oculus” is Latin for “eye.” In ancient Roman architecture, it symbolised the eye of a building while providing natural light, ventilation, and architectural beauty. A special thank you to THIONG WEE, who was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. The upstairs galleries also include interactive spaces that make the visit even more enjoyable. Finally, please help preserve this beautiful heritage building by keeping noise to a minimum and respecting other visitors. Together, we can protect this remarkable place for future generations.🙏

View on GoogleThis place is a gem!! It's fascinating to see the works of botanical artists across time from the British explorers to locals in recent years. They are so technical and intricate. Left feeling struck by the biodiversity in the region and more appreciative of the efforts to study and conserve it. The building itself is also beautiful and peaceful. I really enjoyed my visit!
