In a city full of amazing restaurants, Candlenut is the one I keep coming back to and that says a lot! Visited for their dinner ah-ma-kase, personally I do believe this is the best way to experience the menu as the portioning is excellent and you get so much variety. The presentation is immaculate and the flavours are perfectly executed. I love how familiar the staff are with the menu and they explain the thought process behind each dish in great detail. The menu rotates regularly, which is great as each visit is an entirely new experience. I would definitely recommend Candlenut and I'll be visiting again the next time I'm in Singapore!
View on GoogleMy first time dining at Candlenut @candlenutsg and I can see why it's so highly regarded. Being the world's first Michelin-starred Peranakan restaurant, I was expecting good food, but what surprised me was how approachable the pricing is for a Michelin-starred experience. We started with the Bakwan Kepiting Soup ($16), featuring blue swimmer crab and chicken tofu balls. It was warm, comforting, and a great way to kick off the meal. The Jeju Black Pork Collar Satay ($24) was another standout. The pork was tender, juicy, and packed with flavour, with just the right amount of char. One dish you shouldn't miss is the Chef's Mum's Chicken Curry ($34). Rich, aromatic, and incredibly satisfying, it felt like a comforting home-cooked meal elevated to restaurant standards. My personal favourite of the night was the Candlenut Blue Swimmer Crab Curry ($48). Generous chunks of crab meat were packed into a well-balanced curry that had plenty of depth, with a slight tanginess. And of course, no Peranakan meal feels complete without the Chap Chye ($28). The vegetables were beautifully braised and soaked up all the flavours of the rich broth. For a Michelin-starred Peranakan restaurant, this was honestly a meal that felt both refined and comforting without being overly expensive. Definitely a place I would return to explore more of the menu.
View on GoogleWe made reservations to celebrate our mom’s birthday + Mother’s day and we were not disappointed at all! Ordered the Ngoh Hiang, and Wing Bean Salad to start, followed by the mains - Buah Keluak Fried Rice, Assam Pedas, Beef Rendang, Cincalok Omelette, and the food was really good! Shoutout to Mr Felix who served us and kept us entertained during the meal. He also gave us a bowl of chicken curry and white rice to complete our “Candlenut tasting experience”, and we were truly grateful for it. The meal ended off with a small celebration from Candlenut which prepared for us kuehs in celebration of my mom’s birthday. As a Mother’s day special, they also offered us three chocolate lollies with a special raspberry and buah keluak center! All in all, a very good experience and we were glad to celebrate this occasion at Candlenut 😊
View on GoogleA 1-star Michelin restaurant which specializes in peranakan cuisine. You can choose between the omakase set or the a la carte menu. Menu selection is a bit limited, but mostly good. Try the beef rendang, it is very good. All the servers are very friendly and polite. Consider making a reservation in advance, although the place is not full but only 1-2 tables not taken.
View on GoogleWe were visiting from Australia, and tried Candlenut after seeing it on Netflix's 'Somebody Feed Phil'. We wanted to try something really different to anything we can find at home. Candlenut is the world's first Michelin Star Peranakan restaurant and combines traditional Nyonya flavours with modern techniques. The food and service were incredible. We went a la carte and ordered the pork neck satay, ngoh hiang (stuffed beancurd roll), rendang, charcoal grilled sambal snapper and the babi buah keluak, the dish we'd specifically came for after seeing it on the show. Our server looked surprised that we chose it, and it was a flavour unlike we'd ever tasted before - intense and savoury, and enhanced the fattiness of the pork. We raved about the buah keluak to our server so much that the chef surprised us with a complimentary dessert of buah keluak and chocolate ice cream. I don't think I've ever eaten a dessert so good before! We had a lot of leftovers through a combination of over-ordering and ordering several very fatty meat dishes, but there is the option to take it home (we were unfortunately flying out this morning, so couldn't). Absolute perfection from start to finish! I will definitely be recommending Candlenut to my friends and family back home.
