Sungei Road Laksa is located inside a coffeeshop called Gourmet Street (Jin Shui Kopitiam) in the Jalan Besar area of Singapore. There was only one dish in this joint, but you can add additional toppings. The soup was flavorful, creamy but not too thick. There were some bean sprouts and a little amount of cockle as the topping, which is understandable for the cheap price S$4.50. The cockles were unfortunately not as fresh as i wanted it to be. I could eat it, but not my kids, though. They gave all the cockles to me. At first i was a bit confused, because they didn't provide any chopsticks. Turned out, the laksa's noodle was cut into pieces. So the chopsticks were actually necessary, and instead they gave us soup spoon. I know that this method save a lot of chopsticks, because instead of using both soup spoon and chopsticks, they only need to give you 1 eating utensil. But, it changes the way you eat the noodle, which is a pity for me. We couldn't slurp the long noodles, we ate the cut-into-pieces noodles with soup spoon. I really like the laksa soup and the noodle. and if i will be able to come back, i'm really considering to bring my own chopsticks, and ask the auntie not to cut my noodle. The other solution is to purchase deep fried dish at another nearby joints, so i can use the chopsticks provided. Because it felt like eating a pre cut steak, i was missing the experience of slurping long noodles. Although i understand why they do this, part of me still want to enjoy a S$4.50 laksa noodle, like how it is supposed to be.
View on GoogleExpect long queues for this yummy laksa. Light and tasty gravy, not the heavy coconut milk type. Expect a small bowl per serving. We bought 3 bowls to satisfy our laksa cravings. Service is fast and efficient so the long queue clears decently but still took about 20 mins when we were about the 15th position. Sited within a coffee shop, a bit cramped as there are a number of other stalls. But turnover is fast so we got a seat quite quickly.
View on GoogleHad this for more than 20 years. Not back for 12 years as was overseas on and off projects. Parking also hard. Last time the time without KOL and weaker social media, only need to queue 15 mins at peak hour. Today went at 2pm still queue 30mins as these days lots of tourists as well. However this is the nolstagic laksa taste that some of my older buddies had for 40 years and keep coming back for it. $4.00 for a just right size bowl of old school authentic laksa. Quality is still there. Not too full as old man like me can't really eat a lot these days. Last time must eat 2 bowls. However today I also enjoyed it. Highly recommended.
View on Googleits a food court - people said very nice laksa to me just ok you really need to line up....i give up my friend did...ordered finally came after 1 hour...... taste wise i prefer the katong laksa the one with tourist hype one or last time at tanjung pasar market - there is a stall i had many years but i dont know if i can find the stall again - many times i went no more or different person so sad
View on GoogleWent to try this famous old school laksa today. Arrived 1130am and it was a short queue of 6 pax. This laksa does not have tao pok, it has fish cake and cockles. Chili is served in the bowl at the side. No chopsticks just spoon as the white noodles are cut. Overall nice taste and i finished all the soup. Also bought roast pork and char siew from stall in the coffee shop. I will eat this again, i like the broth, but i will not queue too long for it. Certainly worth going back again.
