Nasi Padang (SGD $12) @ Nasi Padang Sabar Menanti. . Founded in 1920 as a pushcart by Haji Marlian Bin Athar "Bagindo Marlian" and his wife Hajjah Rosemah Binte Mailu, the name of this stall translates to 'wait patiently'. The family-run casual eatery is overseen by daughter Madam Maryulis Bagindor Binte Marlian and grandson Iszahar Tambunan, and still attracts crowds for their consistently tasty and authentic dishes, with a range of about 27 dishes available daily. . Under the strict supervision of matriarch Madam Maryulis Bagindor, dishes are painstakingly prepared according to the family's heritage recipes. She ensures taste remains the same, noting that loyal and regular customers will detect changes in flavours or textures. Generous use of herbs and spices are the norm, and portions are large and hearty.
View on GoogleSabar Menanti is a Malay restaurant located just opposite Golden Sultan Mosque, along North Bridge Road. It serves authentic Minangkabau (West Sumatra, Indonesia) dishes. It has over 57 years of history. The restaurant is now run by the third generation owner, with his mother still working there, overseeing the kitchen and manning the cashier. The restaurant name Sabar Menanti, translates to “wait patiently” in English, as during dining hours, one may need to do as the queue to get food in this restaurant is known to be very long. We came by around 12.15pm and there was a wide variety of food available. - Masak Lemak Siput Sedut: These are mangrove sea snails cooked in a rich curry, made from coconut milk, turmeric, lemongrass and chilies. Sedut literally means "to suck" or "slurp". The pointed bottom tip of the snail shell was chopped off before cooking. So to extract the meat, you put the bigger shell opening to your lips and sharply suck the meat right out. An interesting experience. - Sotong Hitam: Squod cooked in black sauce. There were 2 small sized squids. The squid was a tad dry. - Gulai Urat Tunjang: A rich and spicy Malay coconut milk curry featuring beef tendon pieces. The tendons were soft and the curry was rich. - Sambal Goreng: Beancurd, tempeh, long beans and chili stirfried with sauce. Lovely with rice. - Terung (Brinjal): Grilled brinjal topped with chili paste. Spicy good. - Rice: The rice were too clumpy compared to the past time I dined here. Could be a once-off. - Teh Tarik: Thick and not so sweet. Perfect accompaniment to the meal. My meal came up to $26. The first 3 items - two seafood dishes and one beef dish—were the main cost drivers. Recommended!
View on GoogleMy first visit here to try an alternative to my usual Hjh Maimunah. As I reached past 2pm, only a few dishes were left and the are not warm. The rendang, opor ayam, sambal stingray all has a deep savoury taste that does not leave one thirsty. I will return again around 11ish to taste the dishes in their original warm state. The 2nd floor aircon seating offers a nice respite from the hot weather.
View on GoogleVery busy and crowded. Ran out of my fave terung belado and limited choice of vegs. 19 $for 1 rather bony fish 2 white rice 1 portion each of potatoes and sambal goreng. Sit upstairs in cool air con comfort.
View on GoogleHad a disappointing lontong meal this morning. The lontong was so different from the one i had in October 2025. The lontong then was piping hot (even though it was a take-away), it tasted so good i could taste the shrimpy flavour, the colour was beautiful (minyak semua cukup naik!) so i recommended it to my friends this morning and the lontong this morning was just so meh. It was lukewarm, the gravy was pale, too thick and tasteless. This was not the lontong i had in October 2025. Before leaving I confirmed with the staff that they had indeed changed their cook(s). I just gave them my feedback and hopefully something good can come out of it. My high hopes and expectations are crushed and my day is ruined! My friends will never trust my recommendations again!
