food was mid at best, chicken (yam ring) is dry and bland. braised fish was not bad, still soft. kangkong & fried rice are standard and not disappointing. prawn was $22 for 3 pieces 😀 need I say more? queue was 1 hour outside if you dont somehow get a reservation in advance and another 40 mins for the first dish to arrive. everyone is grumpy so nothing to be said about the service. 白人 occupying half the tables 😀 i think that says alot about the atmosphere and honestly the quality of the food. 4/10. overhyped. best item was probably the iced water.
View on Googlewe read on @straits_times that this iconic 100-year-old Cantonese restaurant will be closing on 28 June so we had to pay a visit before it’s gone for good 😭 we went on a weekday evening and it was SO packed 😮💨 the queue was soooo long but we were super lucky to snag an indoor table! / Homemade Beancurd / — $15 (S) | $25 (M) | $30 (L) this may not look like much but wow it was so flavourful, silky and comforting, one of our fav dish of the night! 🫶🏻 / Yam Basket with Chicken / — $30 🧺 we all agreed this is one of the best yam baskets we’ve ever had 🔥 crispy, fragrant and packed with SO MUCH ingredients! / Roast Chicken / — $25 (Half) | $48 (Full) 🍗 not quite as juicy and tender as we expected but still a pretty decent roast chicken! unfortunately the other dishes were so good that this ended up being slightly overshadowed 😩 / Beef with Fried Ginger / — $15 (S) | $25 (M) | $30 (L) 🥩 the beef was incredibly tender and flavourful! loved the wok hei and the fragrant ginger that brought everything together so well 🥹 / Fried Rice / — $6.50 (S) | $11 (M) | $15 (L) 🍚 truly old-school fried rice 🥹 so nostalgic and so much wok hey!! / Sweet & Sour Pork / — $15 (S) | $25 (M) | $30 (L) 🐷 crispy on the outside, tender on the inside! well coated in a sauce with just the right balance of sweetness and tanginess ⭐️ / Dou Miao / — $10 (S) | $15 (M) | $20 (L) 🥬 we don’t usually order dou miao at a zichar spot but this completely surprised us 🤩 so crunchy, fresh and packed full with garlicky flavours highly recommend to make a trip down before they close on 28 June! 😭🥹 the interior feels so old-school and the service is exactly what you’d expect from a busy, bustling restaurant BUT the food is simply SO good 🔥
View on Google4.5/5 Heartbreaking to hear that this 100 year old establishment is closing down in June. It’s a classic Cantonese spot that still hits the mark on almost everything. The traditional Cantonese egg drop style shark’s fin was well done and delicious. The beancurd with mushrooms was another standout, it was simple and tasty but perfect with rice. We also enjoyed the curry claypot prawns; the gravy was tasty without being overly rich or cloying. The sambal kangkong was excellent too, plenty of wok hei with a generous amount of sambal and hae bee. Even though they aren’t the traditional Cantonese-style deep fried prawn balls, the fried prawns were big, plump and very fresh, with a thin, delicious dusting of batter. My only gripe is the value, $22 for only 4 prawns felt a bit steep. The only real miss was the Salt and Pepper Squid. It tasted like normal fried sotong without a single hint of 椒盐 (salt and pepper). If not for that, it would have been a perfect 5/5. Go visit before they close in June.
View on GoogleVery delicious food here, all the dishes are very local Singapore style, their salted egg prawn, sweet and sour pork, beef hor fan are recommended, taste great. Their yang zhou fried rice is also the best fried rice I had in sg for a long time, even better than the ones I had from five star hotel here. Come visit while they are still operating, restaurant will be closing end of this month after a hundred years.
View on GoogleHad amazing zi char at this restaurant today! Standout dish was the braised fish head — crispy on the outside, soft and tender inside, and full of flavour. The sea cucumber claypot and prawn paste chicken were fantastic too; both were wonderfully crispy outside and juicy within. The fried rice was really fragrant, and the soup of the day — lotus root soup — was rich, comforting, and warming to the soul. Even my three-year-old loved it. The fried noodles, sweet and sour pork, and vegetables were good, though not quite as outstanding as the mains. Still, everything was solid overall. We made a reservation for 1 pm on Sunday and got seated in the air-conditioned area. So grateful and happy to celebrate my mum’s birthday here! Total bill came to around $228, roughly $25 per person — incredibly good value. Note some pics were taken after my family members took part of the food away (like less two chicken wings etc in the photo)
