We enjoyed the meats, especially since we got to grill them to our own preferences. I personally liked the ox tongue because it was absolutely loaded with chopped spring onions. The pre-prepared dipping sauce was good, so be sure to try dunking your grilled meats into it before eating. Ordered a Caesar Salad which, to our surprise, was much larger than expected. Portion catered nicely to the three of us nicely. Creamy, right amount of shaved cheese and large chunky croutons, topped with an onsen egg. The charcoal grill added to the vibe. As you can imagine, with the very marbled wagyu cuts and fats dripping into the heated charcoal, it soon got pretty smoky. I don’t think the exhaust fans/tubes were working at all. Purely decorative, like the postcards and movie posters all over the walls. We had the smaller portioned assorted platter with chucks, blades, short ribs and skirt. Our table is rather tight and the high chairs aren’t really suited for comfort. Good thing we were dressed for comfort. We left rather stuffed and I was a little disappointed I didn’t have room for their signature cold noodles. Maybe I’ll try next time.
View on GoogleUpon being seated, we were first given frozen towels to freshen up—a small touch that's always appreciated, especially on a warm day. Looking through the menu, the meat selection and different preparations all looked very tempting, so we naturally leaned towards the cuts we usually enjoy. The beef tartare has become our son's favourite. He enjoys tartare in general and considers this one among the best he's had. Trying a few small bites, I couldn't agree more. Lightly seasoned with just enough chopped onions and sesame seeds for added texture, the beef was exceptionally tender without the sinew that can sometimes make tartare chewy. The gyutan topped with spring onions was the first to arrive. The slices were wider than what most places serve, yet was still juicy. Even our son, who usually isn't a fan of beef tongue, happily went back for a second serving. We also tried the marinated small intestine. Flavour-wise, it was excellent, though probably the trickiest item to grill and enjoy. The fatty portion firms up quite quickly once it cools, but eating it straight off the grill can be a little too hot, so getting the timing right is key. On their recommendation, we ordered the liver seasoned simply with salt and pepper. The slices were much thinner than what you'd typically find in a bowl of bak chor mee, allowing them to stay juicy while remaining tender instead of becoming chewy. Another great cut was the thick block of beef topped with wasabi (could be one of their premium chuck or shoulder cuts, though I've forgotten). Surprisingly, the generous amount of wasabi didn't overwhelm the meat. Instead, it added a gentle aroma that complemented the rich marbling. Even our son, after scraping off half of the wasabi, enjoyed it. We rounded off the meal with a few more cuts, all consistently well-marbled and enjoyable. The chicken cartilage was also good, though I personally would have preferred less meat attached so the crunchy cartilage became the main attraction. By the end of the meal, we couldn't shake the feeling that everything—from the frozen oshibori towels to the menu and even most of the preparations—felt remarkably familiar. We later learnt that another well-known yakiniku restaurant in the east was started by a former director of Don Don, which explained the similarities. Having now dined at both, I honestly think they're equally exceptional. Choosing between them simply comes down to whichever is more convenient that day.
View on GoogleIt's been almost 7 years since I last came here. The memory of this place was fantastic and I brought my folks here for dinner and everything was still just as great; from the quality food to service. We had cold noodle, beef tongue, tenderloin and beef chuck. The food was so delicious that I forgot to take a picture after eating the beef tongue...the rest were old photos 😋 We like to have early dinner so coming here at 5pm was a greay choice. We parked our car right outside and it was not crowded yet.
View on GoogleMe and my fiancé always come to this Don Don outlet during our special celebrations or during days of craving for their Spring onion beef tongue. We have always love the atmosphere and camaraderie of the staff and their service to their customers. Meat is always so fresh and yummy!
View on GoogleGreat yakiniku place with delicious meat and an authentic Japan-like atmosphere. The charcoal grill adds amazing flavor, especially to the beef tongue and short rib. Service can be hard to call, and the ventilation is quite smoky, but the toilet is clean. Overall, a tasty and enjoyable spot.
