A bright and slightly hot morning—before starting the day, I stopped by one of the legendary kopitiams in the Chinatown area. The combination of hot Kopi O and kaya toast, paired with half-boiled eggs, was quite satisfying. Don’t miss trying the nasi lemak wrapped in banana leaf—it’s definitely worth it. In terms of price, it’s a bit on good deal side compared to other places, but overall, it’s still a great option around Chinatown.
View on GoogleWe visited on a cloudy day with sudden and brief rain in the afternoon, the atmosphere is very chill and we enjoyed sitting there chit chatting for a bit while having our meal. Food is okay, starting we think the pork trotter fried beehoon is quite delicious until we have more bites into it and find it on a salty side. Toast and soft-boiled egg are great and coffee is so good!
View on GoogleThat was super tasty! I found a short video about the restaurant and marked the location in google maps. We ordered Kopi O, eggs and kaya toasts and truly enjoyed the atmosphere, sitting outside. I’d like to visit the place again next time I’m in the city
View on GoogleVisited Tong Ah Eating House expecting that warm, nostalgic old-school breakfast vibe 👴🏻☕—the kind that makes you feel like stepping back in time. Sadly… my experience didn’t quite match the nostalgia I imagined. I ordered the classic breakfast set: 🥚 Boiled eggs 🍞 Toast with kaya & butter ☕ Tea But the taste… honestly, not there. The toast didn’t have that fragrant, old-style charcoal crispness I hoped for, the kaya wasn’t that rich traditional flavour, and the whole set just felt a bit underwhelming. Not the nostalgic experience I expected. I also tried their nasi lemak, mainly because the packaging caught my attention—the anchovies and peanuts were packed separately in little packets, which was quite unusual for me. Taste-wise, it was just okay—nothing outstanding, but edible. What really made me uncomfortable was the moment when the staff started sweeping the floor while I was still eating. Instead of feeling welcomed, I felt like I was being rushed to finish. Plus, the dust while eating… not a pleasant feeling at all. 😕 They do serve lunch too, but based on this visit, the overall experience didn’t quite deliver the comfort or nostalgia I hoped for. Overall: Just an average experience, with room for improvement—especially in service and atmosphere.
View on GoogleThere are many kaya toast breakfast spots in Singapore, but this I will always come back to. Compared to the last time, I think they've toned down the sweetness of the kaya a little (good thing), and toast was less burnt (bad thing!! because they were one of the few I could come to for that extra edge when I wanted it). Coffee is still slightly on the bitter and burnt side - but that's what you get for a more traditional place! Place had a bit more tourists than I recall too, it seems. Went early at 830 am on a Saturday morning and did not have to wait for a seat, and could get a parking lot easily. Be warned though, at many other times parking on the street is horrendous.
