Visited Katanashi An and had a really good experience. The place is just a short walk from Telok Ayer MRT, so it’s easy to find. We tried their bear hot pot and the cotton candy sukiyaki, which was super fun to watch and tasted really comforting. Ordered the Special Chazuke as well—the Wagyu Truffle and Premium Hokkaido were both really nice and came with tofu, dashi, and side dishes. We also added a bowl of ramen to try. The food was enjoyable and the service was friendly and attentive. Bonus point: you get a free ice cream when you follow them on Instagram. The foods are ok, yes! It’s a little bit pricey but I think it’s Japanese food standard price.
View on GoogleOrdered chicken chazuke and unagi chazuke, the food was slightly underwhelming but the tonkatsu save the day by adding an extra flavour to the plate. 😊 Overall a decent Japanese food, but didn't blow me away. BUT the ambience was top-notch! Cozy vibe, great for a date. Service was attentive too. If you're after a chill spot, it's a win. The best part, no GST except for service charge.
View on GoogleKeep your glasses filled (and your eyes peeled) for this corner-tucked izakaya along Telok Ayer, where playful creations like cotton candy sukiyaki sit comfortably alongside familiar favourites. It’s a rather unassuming spot, but when you spot Japanese diners at the tables, you know it’s the real deal. We had their Wagyu Truffle Chazuke ($26++), one of their special chazukes, served with a side dish, tofu & dashi l. This one features silky egg yolk folded over tender, thinly sliced wagyu atop rice. Ochazuke is my go-to warm, cosy light meal, & this one hit the spot. Also had their Premium Hokkaido Chazuke ($25++), with a vibrant assortment of fresh sashimi (incl. salmon, tuna, crabmeat, shrimp, hotate & roe), paired w sliced onions. Sashimi is always a solid pick — this was decent, though I would have loved it slightly colder :”) Bear Nabe ($18) the cutest little bear crafted from chicken paitan & gelatin, which slowly melts into a mini hotpot of pure umami goodness. Comes with tender pork belly & a generous mix of veggies. Truffle Ramen ($20.80) has truffle paste mixed into the QQ ramen noodles & tender chashu for a creamy, flavour-packed, umami-rich broth !! For drinks, we had hot green tea ($3.80+) and Yuzu Otome ($6.80) which had sweet yuzu soda served in a glass bottle — loved the distinct yuzu notes! While it’s a bit on the pricier side, the food delivers on quality. Service is warm and welcoming, making it a reliable spot to swing by when you’re craving a Japanese fix.
View on Google[TELOK AYER, SINGAPORE] From the dishes I've had, I can tell that @katanashi_an are using really solid ingredients to create new renditions, but they have so much potential to do more by sticking to the classics. I think ochazuke as a dish is familiar to many and they do offer quite a few variations. The Wagyu Truffle 🍖 ($26.18) was quite well executed, with it being not too salty, comforting and the truffle not too overpowering. The beef slices were really soft too. The Premium Hokkaido 🐟 ($25.18) boasts a variety of fresh sashimi slices that were just too precious to eat with the hot tea. In fact, I ate the bowl just like a kaisendon and it was pretty darn delicious even without vinegared rice. I tried to find kaisendon in their menu and there was none 🤯 really really wished they have it! As for their hotpot options, the Bear Nabe 🍲 ($18) was presented really cutely, and all ingredients were well seasoned in the light collagen broth. The soup itself was really comforting and tasty, pork slices were of high quality, really tender and vegetables were fresh. Cotton Candy Sukiyaki 🍲 ($24) was an interesting one, because it would have done very very well without the cotton candy, but unfortunately it was way too sweet with it. It was quite a pity because once again the ingredients used were good! Especially the Wagyu slices which were rich and tender. One of the popular ramen flavour was their Spicy Tonkutsu Ramen 🍜 which indeed packed a HUGE amount of spice. This is definitely for the spicy lovers! I really think they can do so much better if some of the dishes can be done the classic way. We still find the dishes delicious in the end, but really loads of potential to do much more! View on GoogleWagyu Truffle Chazuke $26.18++ Tender wagyu slices over rice, topped with truffle paste and egg yolk. The earthy truffle elevates the wagyu, while the warm broth softens the rice and gently cooks the wagyu beef. . Premium Hokkaido Chazuke $25.18++ Fresh scallop, crab, prawn, salmon, tuna, and ikura over fluffy rice. The light broth preserves each ingredient's natural sweetness. . Bear Nabe $18++ The adorable bear melts slowly into a rich soup base. Comforting broth that pairs perfectly with the pork slices and vegetables. . Cotton Candy Sukiyaki $24++ Sukiyaki with cotton candy that melts into the sweet-savoury broth, adding a delicate sweetness to the beef and vegetables. The sweetness balances the umami, making each bite rich and satisfying. . Truffle Ramen $20.80++ Springy noodles in a truffle broth that's fragrant and rich without being too heavy. The truffle smells amazing and it does not overpower the taste.
