They say nostalgia is a double-edged sword. Especially when you chance upon a familiar name from your past. Imagine all those really sweet memories streaming into my consciousness when the name Nanbantei greeted me at Chinatown Point. I couldnt believe my eyes, could it be, that really really nice yakitori joint at the top floor of Far East Plaza actually had a branch, better yet, its still in business?!? I quickly glanced at the menu, sure enough the set lunch was still there! The staff even told me I could still order that exact same bento I loved to bits nearly 20 years ago. Wasting no time i ordered the bento for myself and my partner. My mind now filled with mouth watering yakitori accompanied by their signature bean paste sauce. Unfortunately memory and reality rarely align. Or perhaps nostalgia weighed in a little too heavily. I was taken aback by just how tough the meat was on just about every skewer. The taste too was also kinda of bland, I had to submerge the meat in the bean sauce. Sure the rice with seaweed, mushrooms and minced meat were as i remembered them but the yakitori was so disappointing I was left reeling. My partner even said that ToriQ was better. And you know what, nostalgia be dawned, I actually agreed with her on that. Safe yourself the trip down memory lane, find yourself the nearest ToriQ ask them to load up on the seaweed and pickles, they don't even need the bean paste and you would have a better meal than I did. I won't even comment on the sashimi or tempura all of which are irrelevant if your yakitori joint doesnt even have nice yakitori. Sigh.

the skewers were well barbecued while retaining the juiciness. Sashimi was fresh and the overall experience was a pleasant one! staff were friendly and helpful in recommending dishes too! i personally would recommend the jasmine umeshu if you’re looking for an alcohol to pair the skewers with! it was sweet and fragrant without too overly high in alcohol per cent! it’s best in small sips btw 🕺

If you’re heading to Nanbantei, aim for a seat at the bar—it’s the best way to watch the chef work the grill and have your skewers served fresh to your seat. While they offer several sets that include rice, salad, and tea, ordering a la carte is the way to go if you want to focus on the hits. The chicken wings were sublime, and the chicken skin is an absolute must-order—perfectly grilled and seasoned. Great spot for authentic yakitori.

This is truly an amazing dinner spot in my books! I loved it so much I went twice in a week - once solo (for the salaryman vibes) and once with my partner cos I wanted him to try how good the teriyaki salmon is. I loved the vibes too feels like I’m in Japan. Food is really so good please try.
