Visited The Soup Spoon Union at Velocity @ Novena Square for a quick lunch, opting for their Salad Set featuring a breadless Beef Goulash and a side of Kale Salad. While the food itself remains a comforting, rustic staple, the overall experience was a bit of a mixed bag. First, the frustrations: the dining table was not clean. Upon sitting at the terrazzo-topped table, I had to wipe down a noticeable, greasy residue left by previous diners myself—a sanitation lapse that unfortunately seems to plague this outlet during busy peak hours. Furthermore, you are definitely better off skipping the drink. The Home-Brewed Iced Jasmine Green Tea served in their floral paper cup was incredibly watered down, tasting like melted ice with a mere whisper of jasmine rather than a clean, floral palate cleanser. It lacked any real body and felt like an afterthought. On a much more positive note, the ordering process is quite smooth. Their self-service digital kiosks at the storefront are highly intuitive, making it incredibly easy to customise the set (such as selecting the breadless configuration) and complete the payment. The queue ticket system is highly efficient, with the overhead collection screens clearly displaying prepared order numbers for quick self-collection. As for the food, the Beef Goulash remains a robust, slow-simmered highlight. It boasts a rich, rust-coloured, paprika-infused base packed with tender beef cuts and soft root vegetables, rounded off beautifully by a cool, velvety dollop of sour cream resting on the rim. The half portion of Kale Salad was also a beautifully textured companion, offering a vibrant, fibrous crunch of raw greens combined with the sweetness of mandarin segments, tart cranberries, and a buttery, crisp finish of flaked almonds. A decent, highly convenient spot for a nourishing bowl, but they seriously need to step up their dining area table maintenance, and I would highly advise sticking to plain water over the watered-down iced teas.

I was very surprised by the mixed reviews for this place, so I wanted to share my experience to help balance some of the more extreme opinions :-) I’ve been a regular customer here for several years, and it has consistently been one of my go-to spots. I love soups, and the variety offered is great, both in terms of selection and quality. Everything I’ve tried has been satisfying and comforting. One thing that really stands out is the staff. They’ve been around for a long time and don’t seem to change much, which gives the place a familiar, welcoming feel. They even remember your preferences, which makes each visit more personal. Compared to other outlets of Soup Spoon, I’ve noticed that this particular location is always very clean. The staff regularly disinfect tables and seats. The venue itself is also nice, I especially like the bright, large windows. This place has become my comfort food spot, and I keep coming back for a reason :-)

Update on 06 Nov: I tried the Spicy Chicken Quesadilla at the Soup Spoon, and it was fantastic! The quesadilla had a perfectly crispy shell that added a nice crunch to each bite. The chicken was well-seasoned with a subtle spice that wasn’t overwhelming but had just enough kick. The salsa on the side was fresh and flavorful, adding a delicious tanginess that complemented the dish really well. Overall, a tasty and satisfying choice for a quick meal! The Mala Kimchi soup was well-balanced, with the right level of spiciness and tanginess. The portion size was generous, and the price felt reasonable for the quality. Service was quick, making it a great spot for a fast yet satisfying meal.

Miserable portions which are totally unacceptable given that they had recently increased prices. You can see that the amount of ingredients in the soup is less than half a bowl!? And this was the large bowl, mind you.
