Behind every bowl of Mui Kee congee lies a heritage as rich as its flavour. Its humble origins date back to 1979 where founder Mak Mui opened Mui Kee in a small corner stall in Mong Kok, Hong Kong. Today, Mui Kee Congee is helmed by her grandson, Ah Tung.

Order before taking a seat, self-collection, and tray return. Very strange for a restaurant such as Mui Kee. To make things stranger, the restaurant only had 1 set of menus at the ordering counter. Perhaps a deliberate attempt to force customers to order first before seating? How about bigger groups which usually need more time to decide what to order? How about families with babies and/or children that need to be settled first before ordering? How about groups or people with special needs? The restaurant seems to want everyone stand at the ordering counter and feel the pressure to make a quick decision? It is not expensive to print a few more menus or to have a digital one online. Food is good as usual, but the customer experience is appallling and thoughtless.
View on GoogleHad a satisfying congee set meal at Mui Kee Balestier Plaza. Their youtiao is very crispy and the best I have tasted in a long time. Their fish cake is very good and comes with a variety of dips. Really happy that they open another outlet after Orchard. To find the restaurant, you have to walk along the exterior of Shaw Plaza.
View on GoogleFood was alright, some hits and misses. Portion are generally small for the price point they are listed at. Noodles dishes were not available during my visit because their noodles cooking machine broke down, so that's a bummer. Enjoyed their meatballs congee and the side of preserved bitter gourd. Rest of the menu we ordered was alright and unmemorable. Oh, dace fishball texture was too doughy so that's to avoid. Ingredients were generally fresh but nothing outstanding. Liver in one of the congee was overcooked for that thickness. Service by one of the male staff, think Mr. Lawrence, was sincere and on point. Good initiatives and prompt responses throughout our visit.
View on GoogleMui Kee Congee at Shaw Plaza, Balestier Road, offers an excellent experience for porridge lovers. The congee is expertly crafted, boasting a smooth and creamy texture that speaks to the quality and care put into its preparation. I ordered the century egg and pork balls congee, which balances savory flavors with the unique taste of century egg, creating a harmonious and satisfying dish. The setting at Shaw Plaza is casual and comfortable, providing a pleasant environment for diners. The staff are attentive, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable dining experience. Nevertheless, the price is on the high side, making it a good spot for the experience but leaving some diners doubtful about returning regularly.
View on GooglePretty good food! But note that the claypot rice (and all claypot dishes i think) are only available for dinner. I really enjoyed the claypot rice, and it's customary that we add the minced pork (ordered separately) to it for something extra. The congee was good, so we're the vegetables.. the portion of mushrooms was pretty small (I remembered the serving to be bigger at the Scotts outlet). Nevertheless, very satisfied.
