I read about this production studio recently and decided to pay a visit as I was somewhat and indirectly involved in discussions on copyright claims to P Ramlee movies by Singapore and Malaysia many years ago. I was then Vice President at Singapore TV12 where Malay movies were broadcast. I couldn't get in to see the studio but I took a peek through the zinc gate. The compound was quite big. I can imagine how vibrant the place must have been when the legendary P Ramlee was producing his masterpieces.
View on Google5 star for the nostalgic vive but 0 star for the maintenance, its like they just want banish the place instead. So sad. This could be a good tourist spot and preserving the history.
View on GoogleNostalgic especially for someone who grew up with old black & white Malay films (aka P. Ramlee). Hope the place gets gazetted as a heritage area. The film studio is still there but barricaded perhaps due to safety.
View on GoogleCame across this place as part of the State of Motion Tour organized by the Asian Film Archives. This used to be a bustling studio back in the Malay films golden age era in the 50s and 60s, belonging to the Shaw Brothers, but closed down after the Malay film industry went into a decline. A remnant of Singapore's history, it is heartening to see that the Shaw Brothers chose to keep this building intact but it remains shuttered to the public for reasons unknown. There is still a caretaker looking after this place, though its glorious days have since passed. P Ramlee used to have an office here and legend says there are some film reels in the building which is why the building remains shuttered. You can still see occasional Malay tourists checking this place out and given its historical value, this place can totally be turned into a museum of sorts. Just my 2 cents.
View on GoogleI gave 3 stars rating as I could not go in or peep in as a car was parked outside. And a uncle was cleaning the place.I guess he must be the caretaker. And there's a camera hidden at the entrance.(Facing in).Only manage to take 2 photos. But sooner or later,I plan to go again as im not satisfied yet. 😑
