Sorry it really isn’t even decent fare. I don’t get the hype. Two pax came on a Wednesday evening for dinner around 7.30pm. There were some customers, I wouldn’t say they were crowded but they were short-staffed for sure. We had to queue for about 10 minutes before we could even order. We got one small cod fish and chips ($27.70 for 120g), a shepherd’s pie ($26?) and a homemade lemonade ($8). No receipt was given so the prices I’ve indicated are what I can remember. Overall I paid $59 total, which is crazy expensive for the portion and quality. The cod was quite small. Unfortunately it was greasy and fishy tasting. It did come with a small tub of tartar sauce. The chips were not fried well and were greasy. Shepherd’s pie was a disaster. It came cold, I requested for the staff to reheat it. They did. As you can see from the photo the meat had so much liquid. It was flavourless, the mash was not a mash but potato chunks with some cheese on top. The homemade lemonade just tasted like cordial to me. Was it worth $8? Definitely not. I would be okay with small portions and a long wait time if the ingredients used were better and the food spoke for itself. Unfortunately Smith’s is really lacking in this regard. Pity because I used to really enjoy fare at their Tanjong Katong Rd outlet way back when.
View on GoogleWas around the area and remembered this place and recently on the news quite a bit on their closure. Decided to pay a visit and check out the place in case it really closes for good. Visited on a weekend evening and it was around 5 so it wasn't crowded yet and we got an outdoor table easily. Didn't get to choose as indoor was quite full and seem like a table for 10 was reserved. Thought for a while to decide on what to order, then went in to queue to take orders. When it was my turn, I ordered and surprised that things like lemonade and lemon tea were sold out, and the staff told me already sold out in the afternoon. Soup of the day also sold out, and so was the apple crumble. Ordered and waited for a while to collect the food. When the food was ready for collection, people were already queueing outside the shop wanting to dine and made it difficult to walk around collecting food. They also didn't provide trays so if you ordered too much you have to do a few rounds to collect them all. First had the onion rings, which I thought was pretty good. Then came the dory chips, which the dory was humongous. We initially wanted to get one each but glad we got one to share. The fries wasn't really to my liking though. Also had the Guinness beef pie. Was unexpectedly good as well. There was a tinge of the beer taste, the beef was soft and tender and the sauce, oh my, would be good to have some rice to go with it. Don't really think its a "pie" pie, because it's really not a pie as the pie crust is only on the top and the fillings are not filled within the pie. Last but not the least, had the fried pineapples which not sure if its British but we also loved it. Not very common to find fried pineapples. Would be better if they added a bit more powdered sugar. Overall not a bad meal, just that the place can be a little chaotic, not sure if it's people coming to try before it "closes". Heard they are not closing but going to relocate to East Coast, not sure how accurate is this but worth keeping a lookout and no need to flood this place for now.
View on GoogleIve been here twice. So I can confidently say I wont be back again. Had fish and chips from britian recently and they were nothing like this (except for the unseasoned part). Fries were oily and soggy. Batter for the fish just made you feel gelat. Wasnt fresh and crispy. Soup was ok. Not mind blowing or anything but i had to salt it. And its expensive too. I dont get the hype and why folks are willing to queue but thats my personal opinion. Also, the wait for the food itself is really long. My friend waited for almosy 40 mins and I waited for about 55 mins(they missed out my order). Thats even before the place got crowded. Singapore honestly has better (and more economical) fish and chips.
View on GoogleIf not so crowded probably better. The waiting time is very long. The signature cod fish taste almost like crab meat and i also like the chips quite unlike the one in SG fast food. I like it soft and very potato. I added a lot of vinegar and salt so it wasn't crispy already. The ordering and seating system might need improvement . For non air conditioning and seat outdoor doesn't justify the price.
View on GoogleFinally tried Smiths after a long time. I can say that the price does not reflect the food quality, service and atmosphere. Tried the fish and chips and it is bland (not falvourful at all) and the chips are soggy. Also very shocked that the Sheperd's Pie is sooo oily, not sure if they have used a good quality meat to the beef and if it's even fresh. The bangers and mash are OK, the mashed potatoes are quite flavourful with the gravy along with the sausage. I'm not sure how but the peas are so so soggy... but to spend $120 for this... don't think I will come again.
