We had an incredible time at True Blue Cuisine, with Benjamin behind the arrangements and kitchen, and Peter who showed us around on tour. It was also a joy to be attended to by Dorothy, Jeremy and the rest of the team. Needless to say, I love the offerings at True Blue. Peranakan food like all others, has always been subjective, because it’s always being compared with flavours from home, or “mom’s cooking”. Understandably so, as the flavours we grow up with will always be the greatest source of comfort and authenticity as we know it to be. Also, it is unlike Chinese cuisine, where dishes cooked at home taste completely different from restaurant dishes. Peranakan cooking, in my opinion, is truly from home to home, and home-restaurant, and restaurant-home. Therefore, I especially love having Peranakan food in a historic shophouse of old. It feels right to do so, as long as the food too, tastes right (to us!). 😄! I did not grow up with Peranakan cuisine, but I can say that True Blue for me, among all of the Peranakan food that I have sampled, is undisputedly palatable. It is also the best of all I imagine Peranakan food to be, with the gravy in every dish we’ve tried making me fall prey to yet another scoop of rice to go along with. I used to have other favourite Peranakan restaurants, but those favourite dishes from those places have somewhat diminished over the years, due to menu changes, or changes in flavour or quality. However, since discovering True Blue’s and having a taste of it myself, I can truly say it truly is the one I’d go for, without a doubt. Whether one has a palate more suited to a sweet, savoury or umami profile, True Blue’s flavours cover all of those, for me. It’s impossible not to enjoy a meal of gravy, fish, sotong, and veggies there - those are my favourites, in addition to the Buah Keluak seeds.

I made reservations well in advance because Peranakan cuisine was a must-try while I was in Singapore, and this was one of the few places with availability. The restaurant is beautiful—like stepping into a time capsule of an early 1900s Peranakan home. The staff were very warm, and an elderly woman plays the piano during the meal, which adds to the charm. The food was good, but not exceptional for the price. I’ve had comparable or better meals in Singapore for about half the cost. Some dishes also came out cold. The beef rendang (which was recommended) didn’t seem properly reheated, and the rice was noticeably cold as well. The owner was kind and attentive, but quite insistent that I order more food. Even after adding an extra dish, she continued to encourage me to order more, and I ended up finishing less than half of what I ordered. Overall, I still enjoyed the experience and would recommend it for the ambiance and service. It’s also possible my visit was just an off day.

Have a nice meal there. Love the traditional authentic taste of Penaranka food. All food ordered were great taste, except the turnip for pie tee was kind salty to me Tks for the Birthday treat and rose from True Blue.

Peranakan food at its very best. This is the must go Nonya cuisine in Singapore. The Logan tea and Ayam Pongteh is a must try. The curry fish head is damn shiok. Worth the wait and money. Can skip the desserts.
