Sin Hoi Sai Eating House is a casual Tze Char place in Katong. It’s always quite busy and lively, with delicious food and great service. We loved their house specialty pork ribs, the seafood mee goreng, the dou miao, mapo tofu, black pepper beef, the seafood mee sua, and the baby kailan — and there are plenty more dishes to choose from. The food feels home-cooked, portions are generous, and it’s great value for money. Highly recommended for a casual Chinese dinner.

A true local old-school gem in the heart of Joo Chiat, this family-run zhi char store was absolutely buzzing even on a Monday evening. Ordered a hearty spread for a table of 5 and the standouts were definitely: 1. Guinness Marinated Pork – Soft, tender, and packed with flavour. Each piece was generously coated in a rich Guinness marinade, striking the perfect balance between sweet and savoury. Could not get enough of this. 2. Signature Moonlight Hor Fun – The pairing of the robust black pepper gravy with the runny egg yolk gave the dish such a nice depth of flavour. Once mixed together, it added a creamy, silky texture that complemented the horfun perfectly. 3. Qing Long Vegetable (Green Dragon Chives) – The greens were stir-fried to perfection. Fresh, crisp, and drenched in a light garlicky sauce that still allowed the natural sweetness of the chives to shine through. Apart from the food, what really stood out was the warmth of the people behind this business. The bosses and staff were incredibly friendly, greeting customers as they walked in and seemingly knowing all their regulars personally. With amazing food, warm service, and that nostalgic neighbourhood charm, this is definitely a spot I’ll be returning to again.

Food is really good, affordable too. if that is all that matters, great place! Otherwise, note that there was a COCKROACH the size of a ping pong ball which ran under our legs and up our chair. Understand that it might have come from the outside, but hygiene within the stall is still super important(you can install glass windows for e.g.).

No-frills local zi char eatery, family-owned and operated. The main value proposition here is: 1. The sheer breadth of the menu (an extensive lineup of local favorites, they literally have almost everything!!) 2. It’s one of the increasingly rare zi char spots still open late in post-COVID Singapore We ordered: sambal stingray, moonlight hor fun, Guinness pork ribs, black pepper beef, hotplate tofu, har cheong gai (prawn paste chicken wings), salted egg squid, and sambal stir-fried potato leaves. Food-wise, most dishes were serviceable, with a couple of bright spots. Nothing was outright bad, but much of it landed squarely in the “mid” and forgettable category. - The Guinness pork ribs had a delicious sauce, but the meat quality wasn't the best (too much bone, not particularly sweet or flavorful meat) - The black pepper beef was fine, though it’s hard to go wrong with black pepper sauce - The sambal stingray suffered from a surprisingly bland sambal and had no BBQ aroma - The har cheong gai had okay shrimp paste but the skin was too hard and the meat was dry and overcooked - Lastly, the moonlight hor fun lacked both umami and slickness. Furthermore, despite ordering a large plate, we were only given a single sad egg T_T Again, none of these are outright bad dishes, just not something I'd choose to eat given the large number of better options nearby (unless it's late at night!) If you're in a rush, it's also worth noting that service was slow. The place was extremely busy when we visited, and flagging down staff was difficult; we had to walk to the main counter multiple times just to place orders or make requests. That said, the servers were friendly and never rushed us, which helped soften the experience. Still a solid option for a late-night supper!
