So due to festival the prices increased about 20%-25% from 25th May to 25 June. Bought a few nonyas and traditional ones. Nonya $6.54 (incl tax) was just decent, not impressive for the price. The traditional zhang with egg yolk at $8.17 (incl tax) is kinda disappointing. Cant taste any garlic and dried shrimp (hei bi), no aroma, not fragrant, nothing. Never see or tasted any pork belly in it. Just few chunks of lean meat. However at least the firmness and quality of glutinous rice has maintained consistency all these years. Time to explore other bak zhang outlets.
View on GooglePicked up some glutinous rice dumplings at the heritage favourite Kim Choo Kueh Chang (Katong) along East Coast Road. One of those classic Katong food stops that many locals still return to for their handmade kueh chang.
View on GoogleI have been eating their kuehs and Bak Chang for many years. I am just a little surprised to know that they sell bakes for CNY too. I bought some home to try.
View on GoogleI made a trip all the way from the west side to the east side specifically to buy your bak zhang. Unfortunately, my experience was disappointing. The young man serving customers came across as rushed, and his tone felt rather harsh throughout the process. As a customer, I felt uncomfortable asking questions. The colour-coding system for the different bak zhang varieties was also not clearly explained. When I sought clarification, I was met with what felt like a sarcastic response rather than helpful guidance. I believe there is room for improvement in retail service and customer experience, especially for these premium bazhang where i spent $90. Clearer product identification and more patient customer service would make a significant difference. For comparison, I visited D'Bun last week and had a much better experience. The staff there thoughtfully included a colour reference card in every bag, making it easy for customers to identify each item. The lady who attended to me was also very patient and helpful despite my questions. I hope this feedback can be taken constructively to improve the customer service.
View on GoogleI had their cookies and kuehs. I really liked all of them. I saw many local people bought their foods. They also have a shop of peranakan goods next to the food shop. The second floor was like a small museum.
