I finally made my way to 328 Katong Laksa in Joo Chiat, one of the names that often comes up when talking about Singapore’s iconic laksa. I ordered a small bowl of laksa with a side of otah, keeping things simple so I could focus on the flavours. The laksa came with the familiar thick, creamy coconut broth, noodles, fish cake and cockles, with a decent level of spice. It was comforting and satisfying, but personally, I found the flavour a little less robust than the version I’ve had at Holland Village Market. The broth here felt slightly lighter and less punchy, so it didn’t quite have the depth and intensity I was hoping for. The otah was a nice accompaniment, adding a smoky, spicy element to the meal and pairing well with the creamy laksa. Overall, it’s still a solid bowl of Katong laksa and definitely worth trying if you’re exploring Joo Chiat’s food scene. However, between the two, I would still choose the Holland Village Market version for its richer and more flavourful broth. Perhaps I came with expectations that were simply too high!
View on GoogleOne of the best hidden gems I found in Singapore for laksa. If you’re visiting SG, this place is definitely worth trying! the laksa is seriously so good. The prices are also really affordable (Small SGD 7.30, Large SGD 9.30). It’s a simple self-service spot, and the place itself is pretty small and not exactly Instagrammable, but honestly the taste makes up for everything. No regrets coming here at all.
View on GoogleWe came around 8 PM and the place was quiet, with no queue at all. The laksa was delicious and flavorful, and the noodles were already cut into short pieces, which made it much easier and more enjoyable to eat. The only downside was that the shrimp were quite small and did not look like the ones in the picture. Still, the small portion was already very filling, as the serving size was quite generous.
View on GoogleIf you go during meal times, be prepared to wait for seats indoor, though they do have outdoor seating as well. Side dishes like otah and mantou are also acceptable to the taste buds. Laksa isn't that spicy and they have reasonable numbers of "si-hum" (cockles) in the laksa. However do be prepared to wait 10 minutes for your mantou, but u can enjoy the wall plastered photos of celebrities with the owner, while they prepare the dish food for u.
View on GoogleI came to East Coast especially for the laksa and was not disappointed! Every other laksa I tried afterwards on that trip fell short compared to this one. Just the right amount of spice for me, the broth is very flavorful and rich. Will definitely visit again when in Singapore.
