I’ve walked past these shophouses countless times, but their charm never fades. This stretch of Koon Seng Road is easily one of the most picturesque spots in Singapore. The pastel-colored Peranakan shophouses are incredibly well-preserved, showcasing intricate floral motifs and ceramic tiles that tell a story of our rich heritage. If you’re planning a visit, here are a few tips to keep in mind: • Best Time for Photos: Head there during the "golden hour" (late afternoon) when the sun hits the facades perfectly. The colors really pop against the blue sky. • Be Mindful: Remember that these are private residences. Keep your volume down and avoid stepping into the porches or blocking the driveways. • Explore the Neighborhood: Don’t just stop at the houses! Joo Chiat is a foodie haven. I’d recommend grabbing a laksa or some Nyonya kueh nearby to complete the experience. It’s a quick stop, but definitely worth it if you’re in the East Coast area. A true gem that reflects the unique architectural soul of Singapore.
View on GoogleThe Peranakan Houses along Koon Seng Road in Singapore stopped me in my tracks. Each terrace house is painted in mint, blush pink, and turquoise, with intricate floral tiles and carved wooden shutters that feel straight out of the 1920s. You don’t need a ticket or tour – just walk the street slowly and look up at the details. The craftsmanship on the windows and “pintu pagar” doors is incredible, and the colors pop best in morning light. It’s residential, so be respectful and keep noise down, but locals are used to photos. Took me 20 min to wander but I could’ve stayed an hour. If you love architecture, culture, or just a good Instagram spot, this is a must. *Architecture*: 5/5
View on GoogleIt was a cute and adorable experience i think. There are many colorful houses next to each other, i think they are some kind of old buildings. It was a good spot to take pictures for your instagram feeds, and nearby locations there are many shops that sell trinkets, arts and crafts and also some local clothing brands. But if you’re not into buying those kind of stuff you might get bored here. If you want to see the houses it wont take more than 20 mins. (Generally not much to do around here)
View on GoogleThis street is a tourist attraction for a good reason. During the week it seems less crowded.
View on GoogleThe Peranakan houses reflect a fascinating blend of Chinese, Malay, and European architectural influences, making each one a living museum of cultural heritage.
