This is the old kind of coffee shop so we expect good food but a bit rundown facilities. The hokkien mee was amazing, full of seafood taste and super umami. This comes from real broth, which is thick and flavourful. I love how the prawns make me question all the other shops, because they were so bit and fresh. They deserve better star for their food.

The. Best. Hokkien. Mee. Ever. I’ve tried so many Hokkien mees in Singapore including the ones people deem good, and they all pale in comparison to Swee Guan. The wok hey, the ingredients (protein), the mee itself - cooked to perfection. The complex, smoky, and charred flavour or wok hey imparted to the ingredients just explodes in your mouth with every bite. The $20 portion is good and sizeable for 2 pax & has much larger prawns. Most other places focuses mainly on the mee itself, but Swee Guan is generous with their protein and can still somehow make the taste of the mee shine through with every bite. People say that Swee Guan is more pricey, but I think for the quality and portion of protein, it is worth the travel (though it’s really just a 10mins walk from Aljunied MRT).

[GEYLANG, SINGAPORE - CASH ONLY] one look at the stall and you know you're probably gonna taste years of tradition. Indeed, the hokkien Mee is fried traditionally with hot charcoal, a taste that is very seldom seen. Given the location, you would think that Swee Guan's rendition will be cheap, but it's actually the opposite, with prices being $8/10/15/20. I ordered the $15 portion, it fitted my appetite just nice. I must say, although the noodles themselves aren't much, the amount of ingredients surprised me. The portion came with 5 huge peeled prawns and loads of squid pieces. All of the seafood was fresh! The noodles themselves were full of garlic and wok hei, although the broth itself didn't really have the prawn umami. One thing great to know is that the broth was reduced well, resulting in a thick sauce that coated the noodles well. Despite the high price tag, will I come again? I think so. I don't think I've seen both large quantities of ingredients and deep wok hei flavour in other renditions. When I'm around the area and feeling a treat, I don't mind! I came here on a Friday evening and waited for about 15 mins, so the queue situation isn't too bad too.

Not many Hokkien mee stalls use charcoal fires these days, so that smokey infusion is special. It can be a bit overwhelming though. So the lime and chilli might help by cutting through the somewhat heady smokiness. Without them, I personally, would find it hard to finish even a small portion. The photo shows a $10 portion, which comes with 5 mid sized prawns and some squid.

Ordered HKM with extra prawns at $20. Was there before 5pm and the queue is short. I think this is one of the good HKM I have eaten. Good Wok hei, noodle fried well and taste is great. The prawn broth soak into the noodle without being soggy. 9 big prawns are all very fresh and tasty. Will go back again to eat there to see if there is any difference. Thought the coffee shop atmosphere is not very comfortable.
