My friend recommended this place & we were here to celebrate our mum's birthday! There were 5 of us, and we ordered a few dishes to try out. Firstly we ordered the cold dish which included 4 items (Prawn Ball, Pork Jelly, Liver Roll & Jellyfish). Pork Jelly was cool, silky & packed with savoury pork flavour, the jelly melts gently in the mouth, leaving a rich and comforting taste. Loves their Liver Roll as nowadays it is so rare to find them. Besides that, we also ordered a cold crab for my mum to try. Quite meaty and savoury with its roes. Chestnut Stuffed Chicken is a must try!!!! The chicken was so tender with the aroma of the chestnuts! The gravy was so yummy to eat it with rice. Yellow Chives With Squid was another favourite dish to pair up with rice, the fragrant of the yellow chives together with the freshness of squid, which you will enjoy with every bite. Then we have oyster omelette which was quite crispy. And lastly the Fried Noodles With Seafood warmed our stomach with the sweetness & umami of seafood. Definitely an enjoyable meal~
View on GoogleI've eaten at Chao Shan Cuisine quite a few times from the time when the restaurant was at Beach Road to now at Phillip Street. Their standard has kind of deteriorated compared to the last time that I had 2 years ago. The Prosperity Yusheng is unique cos it's the traditional Teochew style, not the usual ones that you get. It's either you like it or you don't. I like it cos it's more zesty and not so jialat when you eat a lot of it. Roasted Suckling Pig has too much fat. I felt ok with the 1st 2 pieces. By the time you reached the 3rd piece, it's just too much and jialat. Steamed Pomfret is good, though it'll be even better if the fish is not over-steamed, resulting in tougher meat texture. There's too much fish maw in the fish maw soup, resulting in a very thick consistency. There should be a right balance of the amount of fish maw in the fish maw soup. Steamed Prawns were just steamed, nothing special. They're fresh though. Braised Goose Meat was a little lacklustre and bland. This dish was one of my favourite in the past and it was never tasted like this. Too little black moss in Braised Dried Oysters and Black Moss. Everybody wants to huat but there's so little to go around. I'm also not a fan of the dried oysters too. Fried egg noodles is good and the Orh Nee is the highlight st the end of the meal. It's kind of disappointing this time round after all we have been here so many times since their days at Beach Road. Not sure when we will be back here again after this time.
View on GoogleSimply the best orh nee in SG! Heh zor, liver roll, steamed pomfret, cold crab were all five star. I enjoyed the suckling pig very much too but my kids found that it smelt of a strong piggy smell. I like my food to smell of what they are so i prefer it that way but some people may prefer milder smells.
View on GoogleOld school Teochew restaurant. Typical traditional Chinese restaurant. Noisy, boisterous, tables close to one another and you can’t hear yourself talking…also no thanks to 3 kids screaming and running around their table endlessly. Love the food though…pork jelly and prawn balls were good, need more liver in their liver roll, a bit bland. We will usually order braised goose or duck in a Teochew restaurant but the stewed chicken with chestnut caught our eyes. We decided to try something different. Chicken was tender and the sauce was good with hot piping rice. It was my type of comfort food. Another dish that we’ll always order was the crayfish with eggs and onions, but tonight, crayfish was not available and we had to make do with prawns. Tasted good though, prawns were fresh but a bit spicier would make the dish perfect. I liked their version of oyster omelette here: it was the gooey flour type not just flat omelette type found in other restaurants. Oysters were generously added and they were of good size and quality. Disappointed with the orh nee (yam paste) as the pumpkin was so little. Price was very reasonable considering they’re at Raffles Place. Reservation definitely needed- place was packed with people. And oh…no corkage according to the waitress.
View on GoogleFirst and definitely a last. Chestnut prawn(whopping $8 per piece) was sour, we feedbacked to the male boss and were dismissed with “impossible” and that was it. As for the other dishes, you could probably get better at a neighbourhood tzechar place. Ordered the M oyster pancake and added on a S oyster omelette but both were the same size so we checked with the waitress of the omelettes served was S, she said yes. While paying we told the ladyboss about the sour prawn and she cut us off with “waived alr” as if we were trying to get it off our bill. When checking the bill, we realised they charged M oyster pancake twice, and also M oyster omelette. When asked, she went “waitress ordered M, nvm i waive” all this while with NO EYE CONTACT. Would definitely warn my friends about this restaurant.
