Had a craving for Youtiao and was excited to spot a stall at Maxwell Food Centre with an impressive spread of fried items on display. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t quite deliver — the Youtiao ($1.10) was served cold and lacked the signature crispiness you’d expect. For a snack that’s best enjoyed fresh and golden, this one missed the mark.
View on GoogleIt is a typical hawker centre, and wanted to get some snacks. Saw this stall with carrot sticks and got it, for the love of it. It was however so disappointing. Both packets of carrot sticks are not only cold, but tastes weird that I cannot decide if it is rancid taste or turned sour. I bought potato balls too which is too chewy in the sense of pasty and possibly has too much flour jn it. Pricing is pretty reasonable but definitely not worth as it just not palatable.
View on GoogleBought 1 curry puff and a pack of carrot cake sticks. Curry puff had a bit of goreng pisang taste. Carrot cake sticks were cold and smells like jackfruit. Oil used for frying was not exactly fresh, but also not recycled till the strong foul smell like some other places.
View on GoogleI was attracted by the wide arrays of fritters on offer, picked a buttery bun ($1) and a banana fritter ($1.5) to go with my coffee. The taste was alright except the size of the butterfly bun was huge, the banana fritter was crunchy on the outside but sweet on the inside. May come back again to try the other fritters.
View on GoogleThe people handling the store are nice and service was good and friendly but unfortunately the fried stuff is not. I only got the carrot cake sticks as they look so tempting (and my favourite) but they taste more of a mix of cempedak and banana, like they are all in the oil together.... it's also super oily. It also leaves a bad after taste of the old, sightly rancid oil.... If I had read the reviews here, I would not have wasted my money. As they are the only fried food store that is open when I was there at around 07.30am, the whole food centre smelt of old frying oil which overpowered the lovely fragrance from the chicken rice store. I would definately not buy from them again till I see better reviews.
