19th Jul’26 Visited Maxwell Food Centre today for a weekend brunch. Instead of joining the crazy queue at Tian Tian/天天, we decided to go for Ah Tai/阿仔 Hainanese Chicken Rice instead. Ah Tai was the head chef at Tian Tian for more than 20 years before opening his own stall, so we thought it was worth giving it a try. We ordered a whole chicken, chicken livers, green vegetables, bean sprouts, & four plates of chicken rice, all for S$46.00. The poached chicken was tender, juicy, & moist, topped with a generous drizzle of savoury soy sauce that brought out the natural sweetness of the meat. The rice, cooked in chicken stock with ginger & garlic, was fragrant, fluffy, & not overly oily. I actually prefer this lighter & cleaner style compared to many other chicken rice stalls. The best part ? The queue was much shorter than Tian Tian’s, & I felt Ah Tai offered better value in terms of quality, portion size, & price. That said, I still prefer Guangdong Gui Fei chicken/贵妃鸡 (清远鸡) or Malaysian kampung chicken over our local white broiler. The firmer texture & richer flavour are just more to my liking.

Ah Tai Hainanese Chicken Rice inside the Maxwell Food Centre is a brilliant alternative to its ultra-famous neighbor. Their Hainanese chicken here is incredibly tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. When the line at the nearby Tian Tian was wrapped around the corner ands all the way outside the building, it was simply not worth the massive wait, so we stepped over to Ah Tai, which I think is the ultimate pro move. The quality is easily on par, and it delivers a spectacular plate of Singapore's definitive national dish without the tourist-heavy frustration. The chicken is poached to perfection, with a beautiful, silky texture, and it's served over savory rice that’s absorbed the rich chicken broth. Paired with their sharp, zesty chili sauce and dark soy, it's quite delicious. The Maxwell Food Centre food hall is perpetually buzzing, loud, and crowded. Finding a spot requires patience, but even if you have to share a large table with strangers, you will eventually secure a seat. Arrive slightly before 11:30 AM or after 2:00 PM to snatch up your chicken plate with ease. Note: The owner, Ah Tai, was actually the head chef at Tian Tian for over twenty years. After a highly publicized falling out with the founder's family, he walked out, took his recipes, and m set up his own competing stall m two units down the same row. It is an authentic hawker experience that proves you don't always need to stand in the longest line to get the best food.

Superb chicken rice that’s a must try at Maxwell Hawker Centre. Each granule of rice is perfectly coated with the chicken stock / broth. Not to mention the spicy acidic combination of the chili on the side which elevates the dish even further, bringing a fun harmony of flavour that portray’s one of Singapore’s beloved national dish so well. Price is also great $5-10! While i forgot the price i paid for, note that I took the middle size option.

After hearing about the legendary chicken rice at Maxwell from the social, I decided to give Ah Tai a try— Skip the massive lines a few stalls down and head straight to Ah Tai! The owner used to be a chef at Tian Tian, and the quality here is just as spectacular. The poached chicken was unbelievably moist and tender, and the rice was so fragrant, personally I would like a bit more flavorful but still good own its own. What really made the meal for me was the chili sauce; it has a fantastic, zesty kick that pairs perfectly with the savory soy drizzle. Plus, getting a warm, comforting bowl of soup on the side was the perfect finishing touch. It felt like an incredibly authentic, satisfying Singaporean meal without the insane tourist lines.

Chicken was really good especially with the chilli which was shiok! The chicken rice was tasty but I felt it was not as chicken-y as I would have liked and also a bit too soft. All in all though, very satisfying !
