Came for lunch with a friend visiting from out of town, and it’s a great way to introduce people to local Singaporean food in a fancy way. The interior gives that colonial black and white feeling, very nice waitstaff. The satay was some of the tastiest I’ve had, the beef rendang is very very rich, and the chicken rice was very refined but juicy and tender. Definitely a place to go on a special occasion.
View on GoogleVery nice interiors evoking Peranakan ambiance. Came for lunch on a Friday and there was already a lineup of guests with reservations 10 minutes before opening. Reservations essential. Restaurant is smaller than I had expected. Food is very good; well spiced but not overpowering. Interesting cocktails. Downside is that while the location is superb, this also means this is probably the chain's most touristy location, which takes away from the atmosphere somewhat (not the restaurant's fault, of course)
View on GoogleHad lunch at National Kitchen by Violet Oon at the National Gallery Singapore for my first ever encounter with Peranakan cuisine. ⚜️ Following a recommendation from my trusty travel advisor ChatGPT, I ordered the Ayam Buah Keluak, often considered one of the signature dishes of the cuisine. ⚜️ The chicken stew is served with a local nut called Buah Keluak, alongside white rice and roti prata. The flavour proved difficult to compare to anything I had tasted before-earthy, slightly bitter and surprisingly reminiscent of a grainy chocolate pudding. Definitely an acquired taste. A glass of Pinot Noir accompanied the meal rather nicely. ⚜️ For dessert, I chose the Pulut Hitam with Coconut Ice Cream, a black glutinous rice dessert sweetened with Gula Melaka. Imagine a warm rice pudding served with the consistency of a soup and you'll be somewhere in the right neighbourhood. Delicious, yet admittedly a little outside my culinary comfort zone. ⚜️ All in all, an interesting opportunity to discover a cuisine l had never encountered before. Great location, beautiful ambiance and impeccable service. Give this a try if you're feeling adventurous and looking to experience something distinctly Singaporean!
View on GoogleAbsolutely lovely experience! And the beef is worth the hype! The coctails and food were perfect. We found the serving sizes very generous. The service was professional and courteous. I would definelty come here again to try more dishes and would definelty reccomend. We thought it was value for money, feeling like a high end experience.
View on GoogleThe elegant setting at National Kitchen by Violet Oon really made the meal feel special, and the service matched that experience well. I especially enjoyed how the dishes all had their own character, from the rich Beef Rendang to the desserts at the end. It was a memorable meal overall, and I’d happily return when I’m in the area again.
