Traditional Teochew style bakuteh that is more peppery without any herbal note. This shop has been here for decades & I used to frequent this when I was much younger. The quality seems to have dropped over the years with other better baketeh chain restaurants that are more established. The soup is quite bland & slightly sweet, not to my liking. The braided pork knuckles were tasty but too much fat. The ‘he cho 虾枣) was also very bland, tasted more like hash brown & not meaty at all. Overall, it is not worth coming here anymore.
View on GoogleBak Kut Teh soup is AMAZING. You can ask for soup refill and they are quite generous with the pork ribs too! My favourite dish though was the 'secret dish' - "Cai Po Guo Teow"! (See the plate in the centre that looks like fried kway teow rice noodles with egg and kailan) Love the simplicity of the vegetable dishes too. And how the salted vege and peanuts are cooked in pork lard so more delicious and less wastage. 👍🏻 Finally, after all that rich and oily food, you get a traditional pot of custom mixed chinese tea leaves which the boss has handpicked to go with the bak kut teh. Quite cleasing and refreshing for the digestive system! We came around 6pm, it was just nice not too crowded on a Sunday evening. Loved how the menu is just all pictures haha. Simple and straightforward (just point ☝️😆) Weather was good and sitting outside gave good enough lighting to chill till 8pm 😊 Some of the folks working here are quite old but still so hardworking. Hope more young folks can step up to preserve our local heritage foods like this 💪🏻
View on GoogleExcellent pork spare rib soup. One of the best if not the best I have eaten. The soup is extremely tasty with pork taste and not too peppery. Given my particularly sensitive taste buds, I have to give top marks to the soup. The ribs are cooked just right, is indeed a skill required, where it's tender but not to the extent that it just falls off and feels like bitting into soft bean curd. If so, this is easy to make, all you have to do is just keep boiling it for a long long time. A restaurant not to be missed!
View on GoogleSadly, this eatery has closed as of 1st July 2023. Located in hip Tiong Bahru is this rare traditional corner shop selling good old fashion Bak Kut Teh. Soup is peppery with prime rib perfectly cooked where the meat just comes off in a bite. Simple side dishes of chye poh omelette and stir fry veg completes our lunch. Satisfied!
View on GoogleGood food. Good service. Reasonable prices now that they have gone into the POS method. Refill soup is possible. Nice tasting ribs and food. Choice of fatty bones or lean bone. The vegetable options are plentiful. They also have the Chinese tea to go along the meats. They do more than Bah Kut Teh type, they too have main dishes.
