This is our must-visit spot for samgyetang every time we're in Seoul! We travel to Seoul almost every year, and ever since our first visit 7 years ago, the quality has remained consistently excellent. The restaurant has expanded into a much larger space compared to before, so the queue is now much more manageable. Even when there's a line, it moves quickly, and the food is served incredibly fast. This has become one of our family's favourite meals in Seoul, and we always make it a point to come back. The black chicken samgyetang is still my absolute favourite, and their kimchi is simply amazing. So happy to see that after all these years, they're still maintaining the same great taste and quality!

Commercial, and Packed with Deep Ginseng Flavor! If you want to experience a true Seoul institution that operates like a beautifully oiled machine, Tosokchon Samgyetang (토속촌 삼계탕) is a must-visit. It is incredibly big and spacious inside, yet the service is lightning-fast and undeniably commercial to handle the massive influx of diners. Knowing that tech icon Jensen Huang dropped by here recently definitely adds to the allure—there is a reason it’s considered a benchmark for authentic Korean culinary culture. The Dishes: We ordered one White Ginseng Chicken Soup and one Black Ginseng Chicken Soup. The presentation was beautiful, topped with clean pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pine nuts, and green onions. The highlights for us: The Broth: Absolutely exceptional. It is incredibly thick, velvety, and carries a deeply comforting, full-bodied aroma of premium ginseng. You can taste the hours of simmering in every spoonful. The Ingredients: Tucked inside the chicken, you'll find pristine, massive whole ginseng roots, chestnuts, and a core of sticky glutinous rice (糯米). While the venue feels less like a quiet, hidden neighborhood joint and more like a high-speed culinary production, the flavors themselves remain top-tier and intensely authentic. A classic Seoul experience! Here is the science behind what happened to my line: The Glutinous Rice (糯米) Factor: Glutinous rice consists almost entirely of amylopectin, a highly branched starch structure. Because it is cooked inside a boiling chicken, it undergoes intense gelatinization. This makes it incredibly easy for your digestive enzymes to break down instantly, causing a rapid, sharp glucose influx—even worse than standard white rice. The Creamy Broth Thickener: Traditional commercial Samgyetang broths often incorporate a small amount of glutinous rice flour or nut powders directly into the soup to give it that signature "very thick" texture. You were essentially sipping pre-gelatinized carbs along with the broth. The Chestnut: While whole and natural, chestnuts are a high-starch, high-glycemic nut (unlike fatty nuts like almonds or walnuts). Biohacking Tweak for Next Time: To enjoy the deep immunity-boosting benefits of the ginseng broth without the metabolic fallout, eat the outer chicken meat and drink the broth first to coat the gut with protein and fat, and completely avoid excavating the sticky rice core inside! Yayyyy!!

After spending the morning exploring the beautiful palace next door, Donkey and I went to Tosokchon Samgyetang for lunch. I had heard about this place before but our cycling friends also recommended it as a must try spot in Seoul so we knew we had to visit. The restaurant is set in a lovely traditional building which creates a perfect atmosphere after walking around the palace grounds. We were told that one chicken and a pancake would be the right amount for two people so we ordered the Wild Ginseng Cultivated Root Black Chicken Samgyetang and a Seafood Green Onion Pancake (Haemul Pajeon). To start, they brought us two small glasses of ginseng wine which was quite strong – Donkey really felt the kick from it. We decided to pour both glasses into our soup hoping it would enhance the herbal flavors. To be honest, the chicken soup did not quite meet our high expectations. We were looking forward to a rich ginseng taste but even with the added wine the flavor was more subtle than we anticipated, despite them using Korean ginseng. However the glutinous rice stuffing inside the chicken was truly special – it made the dish very filling and comforting. The portion size was perfect for two people and with all the side dishes served we left feeling satisfied. The historical setting of the restaurant makes it a unique place to dine after exploring the nearby palace. While the soup flavor was milder than expected, the experience of trying this famous dish in such a beautiful location was worth it. Useful Tips: - A 5 minute walk from Gyeongbokgung Station (Line 3), Exit 2. - If you find ginseng wine too strong, mix it directly into your soup. - One chicken and one pancake is plenty for two people – you will not leave hungry. RATINGS Atmosphere & Setting: 5/5 Food Quality: 3/5 Value for Money: 4/5 Overall Experience: 4/5

I have tried Ginseng Korean black chicken (Silky fowl) soup as I have to try something new. It was like a comfort food containing boiled chicken and rice with aroma of spices and a side dish of Khimchi. The price of dishes I felt comparatively cheaper with the portion size they are providing. It costed me 25000 KRW only for the whole chicken rice soup. The restaurant wooden architecture seemed like I was eating inside an ancient place. I would definitely come here again if I visit seoul to try something else. There were so many items worth trying here.

One of the most legendary samgyetang restaurants in Seoul, located near Gyeongbokgung Palace, making it a great stop before or after sightseeing. Even before lunchtime, the queue was already quite long, but the wait was reasonable because the restaurant had plenty of seating. We ordered the original samgyetang and haemul pajeon. The chicken was incredibly tender and easily fell apart with chopsticks. The milky-white soup was rich, comforting, and filled with herbal ingredients like ginseng, jujube, garlic, and glutinous rice, making it feel both hearty and nourishing. The haemul pajeon was also delicious — savory, crispy, and full of seafood and green onion flavor. A very satisfying and comforting meal overall.
