Before coming here, I had watched Kumagai’s film, so visiting afterwards felt truly meaningful. The museum has been beautifully and modernly built on the site where he once lived. Spread across three thoughtfully arranged floors, the gallery allows visitors to see works from different periods and observe how his style evolved, which is truly impressive. Some of his personal belongings are also on display, and the top floor is dedicated to a lovely collection of family photos, from his youth to his later years, along with books of his own. On the ground floor, at Cafe Kaya — named after his daughter Kaya and also showcasing her beautiful ceramics — you can relax with wonderful art books while enjoying tea or coffee served in her handmade cups. The ladies working there are also very kind and helpful! It’s definitely a place worth visiting.
View on GoogleI love this place ! From the outlier to the inside, so much to see, the intimate setting let you get lost in the work of a once lived, incredible artist and their artistic family. Always touches my heart differently in each visit and I will keep returning. Also a charming cafe, good coffee, handmade cakes and cookies, friendly staff 🐈 enjoy

View on GoogleThe architecture is pretty nice.
View on GoogleAn art museum standing quietly in a peaceful residential area. The museum was built on the site that was once the home and studio of painter Kumagai Morikazu (1880-1977), and it's now run by Toshima City. Kumagai Morikazu Museum 41st Anniversary Exhibition "Morikazu and Hometown." is currently on. (until 2026. 6/28) So many works that convey Morikazu's sincerity and purity.. The accompanying comments are lovely too. Morikazu reportedly kept pursuing a unique painting style throughout life. I was drawn to the touch and colors of the works in what's called the "Morikazu style," reportedly established after age 70, and became a huge fan☆ The building is also really lovely. "Cafe Kaya," a little way down the stairs right after you enter, the exhibition rooms, the stairs, the door handles, the sign plates for the restrooms and so on.. so many cute things. There's a gentle atmosphere, and it gave me a warm, cozy feeling. Thank you. No photos in the exhibition rooms. Collections of works, related books, cute goods, and more are for sale. About a 10-minute walk from Kanamecho Station. There are signboards, which is much appreciated☆
