This was the best Yoshoku dining experience I have ever had in Japan. The place itself together with the friendly staff in there were already part of the history for over half a century. Most, if not all, the dishes were prepared by order and they were very delicious. Really enjoyed the vibe and retro decor there. Watching the chefs cooked each meal for customers was part of the amusement. They welcomed tourists to visit even though almost all other customers were Japanese. They also had English menu.

When it comes to Yoshoku (Japanese-style Western cuisine) in Asakusa, Yoshikami is the undisputed crown jewel. I arrived around 12:00 PM on a weekday and faced about a one-hour wait—a clear testament to its legendary status. Instead of forcing you to stand in a rigid queue outside, the staff takes your name and group size and tells you exactly what time to head back. This system allows you to use your waiting time effectively to explore the neighborhood, which is an absolute lifesaver, especially during the blistering summer heat. On this visit, I ordered a beautifully classic lineup: Tongue Stew (Tan Stew): ¥3,400 Fried Prawns (Ebi Fry): ¥2,000 Hamburg Steak: ¥1,700 Rice: ¥400 Right from the start, the hospitality from the senior gentleman at the front left a lasting impression. His warm, genuinely welcoming demeanor gave this highly sought-after institution the cozy, comforting charm of a nostalgic neighborhood diner. The undisputed anchor of Yoshoku is, of course, the demi-glace sauce. The rendition here doesn’t rely on cheap sweetness; instead, it leans toward a deeply savory, slightly bitter, and beautifully mature profile. It packs incredible depth and richness without ever feeling overly heavy, keeping your palate completely engaged down to the very last bite. The Tongue Stew was spectacularly tender, effortlessly falling apart at the mere touch of a spoon. The Hamburg Steak was remarkably juicy, bursting with rich meat juices, while the Fried Prawns were plump, generously filled, and boasted that irresistible, snappy (puri-puri) texture. This is a phenomenal establishment that meticulously protects and honors the beautiful traditions of old-school Yoshoku. It completely makes sense why it has been so deeply loved for generations. Thank you for an absolute masterpiece of a meal!

If you are looking for ‘Yoshoku’ cuisine in Tokyo then there is no need to look further than Yoshikami. This is comfort food recognisable the world over from a century of pernicious Western cultural influence. This 1950s establishment is a celebration of an era bygone and is perfectly situated in the asakusa alleyways. Come early or you will be faced with a queue of 60-120 mins. The service is pleasant and friendly once you get in and my favourite is a seat at the bar counter where you can admire the organised chaos in full flow. It’s very likely the owner himself Hiroaki will warmly greet with a warm smile. The beef stew, omurice and spaghetti napolitan are the legendary favorites and depending on your calorie cravings one or all are well worth the order after the wait. But the menu is extensive and well worth trying. And frankly for my Asian biased taste buds they are a premium on their og western counterparts. The prices are reasonable if on the higher side but there’s little to dislike in getting comforted at Yoshikami since its tag line うますぎて申訳けないて! ‘we are sorry it taste so good’ is as emblematic of its food as it is of its cultural imposition.

We got the Pork Cutlet Sandwich and Beef Stew. Beef stew was amazing, decadent, strong aroma and tender texture. The pork cutlet was crunchy, and very tasty. The line was pretty long but the waiting system let us stroll around while waiting. Have went before and will come again.

洋食 ヨシカミ is everything I hoped for and more — a true Asakusa classic that lives up to its reputation. The Napolitan spaghetti was pure comfort food: perfectly cooked noodles, rich tomato sauce, and that nostalgic Japanese yoshoku flavor done just right. The omurice was a highlight — fluffy egg, well-seasoned rice, and a generous, silky ketchup sauce that ties everything together beautifully. The beef stew was deep, rich, and tender, with the meat melting in your mouth after hours of careful slow cooking. What really stands out is the consistency and heart behind the food. Nothing feels over-styled or gimmicky — just honest, well-executed Western-style Japanese cuisine that has clearly been perfected over decades. The atmosphere is warm and lively, the service is efficient and friendly, and you can feel the history of the place the moment you sit down. If you’re in Asakusa and want to experience authentic, old-school yoshoku at its best, ヨシカミ is an absolute must-visit. I’ll definitely be back.
