The Best Authentic Vegetarian & Vegan Indian Food in Tokyo Ueno area! If you are a vegetarian, vegan, or just someone who appreciates incredible, layered spice profiles, Vege Herb Saga is a mandatory stop in Tokyo. Located just a short 2-3 minute walk from Okachimachi Station (right near Ueno), this cozy basement restaurant serves some of the most uncompromisingly authentic Indian food you will find outside of India. The menu is an incredible mix of both North and South Indian specialties, and everything is 100% vegetarian (with tons of clearly marked vegan options). Because the owner follows Jain dietary traditions, everything is prepared with absolute purity—no meat, fish, eggs, or heavy artificial thickeners. The Naan and Roti are outstanding, made completely fresh to order. Finding true eggless naan in Tokyo can be a challenge, but theirs is absolutely perfect. Their Masala Dosa is beautifully crisp, massive, and served with a deeply flavorful sambar and fresh coconut chutney. The Curries:Unlike many spots in Tokyo that sweeten or tone down the heat for local palates, the chefs here keep the flavors true to their roots. The Chole (chickpea curry) and Bhindi (okra) are packed with fresh, vibrant spices that warm you up without feeling overly heavy or greasy. It’s located down a flight of stairs in the basement (B1F), giving it a hidden, underground feel. The dining room is simple, clean, and unpretentious, with around 30 seats. The staff are incredibly friendly, speak good English, and are very attentive when explaining which items can be customized to fit your exact dietary needs. They prepare everything completely from scratch after you order, so expect a tiny bit of a wait for your food to arrive—but the incredible freshness is worth every single minute. (Note: It's best to check if they take cash or card depending on the day, so keep some yen on hand just in case!) Will definitely be back next time I'm in the Ueno area!

We had a wonderful dining experience at Vege Herb Saga! The food was absolutely delicious. I tried the Hyderabad Dum Biryani and the Naan Set and both were outstanding. The biryani was fragrant, perfectly spiced and packed with flavour, while the naan was fresh, soft and paired with the vege curries. The chai was another highlight warm, comforting and one of the best I had in Tokyo. What made the experience even better was the friendly chef, who was very welcoming and passionate about the food. The restaurant has a warm, cosy atmosphere and is noticeably more spacious than many other restaurants in Tokyo, making it a comfortable place to enjoy a meal. If you are looking for authentic vegetarian Indian cuisine in Tokyo, I highly recommend Vege Herb Saga. I will definitely be back! 🍛☕️✨🇮🇳🇯🇵

After reading the reviews, we decided to visit this restaurant with a mix of curiosity and expectation—and I’m glad we did! The food was simply exceptional. I never imagined I would find such authentic and flavorful South Indian cuisine in Tokyo. After having roti and curry for the past few days, I was craving something closer to home, so I ordered rice, rasam, and curry. The experience exceeded all expectations. What impressed me the most was the quality of both the food and the service. Despite what appeared to be a team of only four people managing the entire restaurant, everything was organized, efficient, and delivered remarkably quickly. A special mention goes to the Aviyal—it was outstanding. The aroma of coconut oil, combined with perfectly cooked vegetables and balanced seasoning, created a dish I will not forget anytime soon. In all honesty, I have rarely tasted Aviyal this good, even in Kerala or Tamil Nadu. The rice portion was generous for one adult, and the rasam was sufficient to be shared between two people. I also noticed several dosas being served at nearby tables, and even from a distance, the aroma was incredibly inviting. Most importantly, this is a 100% pure vegetarian restaurant, and they also serve Jain food, making it an excellent choice for those seeking authentic vegetarian dining in Tokyo. Highly recommended for anyone looking for delicious South Indian food, warm hospitality, and an authentic dining experience.

Anybody strictly following Jain or vegan diet should definitely visit here..Lipsmacking Indian cuisine taste makes u feel like u NVR left India. Such a homely staff nd vibe makes it feel India in Japan... Their south Indian and punjabi is worth trying in a country where you crave indian food. Would recommended to definitely try their Paneer tikka masala, Roti, Cheese Kulcha, Butter Naan, Dal Fry, Jeera Rice, Cheese Dosa, Masala Dosa, Plain Dosa, Lassi, butter milk. You ask and they will try to make it for you with a smiling face . Very close to Naka-okachimachi & Okachimachi station which makes it extremely accessible. Sujit Ji, the head of staff was extremely warm and welcoming, which made our experience extra special! Must visit in your next trip to Japan!
