ぽんたPonta Honke
Streamlined, warmly decorated eatery offering traditional regional dishes for lunch & dinner.
【2 minutes on foot from Ueno-Hirokoji Subway Station, 3 minutes from JR Okachimachi Station】Founded in Meiji 38. The specialty of “ぽん多本家” is 『カツレツ』, created when its first-generation founder, formerly a chef for the Imperial Household Agency, fried a Milanese cutlet tempura-style, becoming known as one of its originators. Its deliciousness is truly sigh-inducing. Carefully selected pork loin has its fat removed and sinews meticulously trimmed. The removed fat is used as lard, and the meat is slowly fried, starting at a low temperature and gradually increasing it. The beautiful golden coating has a light texture. The concentrated flavor of lean meat is complemented by the lard's aroma and richness. Of course, it's not just 『カツレツ』. 『タンシチュー』 and 『…

Pork loin cutlet was delicious, very tender. I found it to be "lighter" than other tonkatsu places but it was still good. Miso soup was nice too.
View on GoogleI went there for dinner. The restaurant was a bit hard to find — there was no clear sign at the entrance, just a plain wooden door. When I arrived, there was one group ahead of me, and I waited less than 10 minutes for a table. I ordered the pork loin cutlet. I usually love tonkatsu, but this time I was quite disappointed. The breading didn’t stick well to the meat, and the pork wasn’t as tender as at other places. The sauce was average — not too sweet or salty. Considering the quality, I found it quite expensive for what it was.
View on GoogleThis restaurant was listed on Michelin guide as a Bib Gourmand. It was relatively easy to find and had a traditional vibe with an open kitchen. We waited about 10 minutes before being seated on the second floor. We ordered pork cutlet, fried prawn, fried anago (eel), with rice/picked vegetables/miso soup. The pork loin cutlet was delicious - very tender with a nice crisp. The fried anago was my favorite and well worth the money. The prawn was sold at the market price, a little over 4,000 yen - also worth getting. Between the two of us, we paid about 80 USD. Definitely worth trying out if you’re willing to splurge a little!
View on GoogleA really cool place to try a traditional tonkatsu In Tokyo. With 4 generations from the same family, the tradition is being perpetuated. The taste of the tonkatsu is precise and light, with the side dishes and miso soup, on the bolder side. I can appreciate why many locals come to this place. A must try if you are in the area.
View on GoogleA cutlet restaurant with tradition atmosphere. They serve English menu and cutlet pork chop is alright. What amaze me is the cutlet squid, thick in size with very good texture , what a masterpiece! Waitress asked me politely and see if I need to have some more rice! (Note: restaurant close at 8pm)
