After passing by many times, I finally went in…. and Tempura Teishoku lunch set was very good! Each tempura served individually and freshly fried with variety of mushroom, kabocha, onion, fish, eggplant, shrimp. It was delicious! 👍

I had been meaning to visit for ages, and 10 years had already passed. They seemed to be open for lunch that day, so I made my first visit. The narrow interior extends toward the back, with 6 counter seats and 2 tables seating 8. 🟩天ぷら御膳 (1,280円 including tax) Rice, 2 small side dishes, miso soup The tempura ingredients were maitake mushrooms, onion, purple sweet potato, conger eel, carrot, shrimp, and shiso leaf They provide tempura dipping sauce and salt. The tempura had a light coating and was nicely fried. I appreciated having each piece served individually, freshly fried. I had a refill of rice, but the tempura pieces seemed rather small and few in number. I might have liked a little more volume. Also, I had no heavy feeling in my stomach afterward, so I imagine they use good oil. It left a good impression, so I plan to visit in the evening soon.

I occasionally come here for lunch. Beyond the food itself, even the tableware—such as the thinness of the soup bowls—shows a refined attention to detail you would hardly expect from a lunch meal.

I went to the Japanese restaurant 『ちそう』, right beside the exit of 湯島駅. As I passed the restaurant, a sign reading “Tempura set meal, tendon, seared bonito rice bowl” caught my eye. I spotted a small 『ちそう』 sign above and to the left of the sliding door! There is a counter at the front and two four-person tables at the back. I ordered 『天丼 1,280円』. It came with a small side dish, pickles, and miso soup. An elegant tendon. I was happy to see so many tempura ingredients on top. The rice-bowl sauce and its color were refined too. Unlike the pitch-black sauces around Asakusa, this seemed like it would taste light and refreshing. The owner told me, “Please let me know if you need more rice.” Sure enough, although hidden beneath the mound of tempura, the rice portion was modest. The tempura was crispy and delicious. There was plenty of tempura to sink your teeth into. The rice was indeed a little scant. But since I tend to overeat, perhaps this amount was just right. It would not interfere with my afternoon work! Some regulars came in after me. They were relatively older. A Japanese restaurant for grown-ups.

I visited a Japanese restaurant without a signature dish, not far from 湯島駅. A flyer for a yellowtail rice bowl had caught my eye when I passed before, and I had been curious about it ever since. This time, I chose a straw-seared rice bowl made with early-season bonito from Katsuura. After ordering, I was immediately captivated by the careful straw-searing process performed right before my eyes. The rising aroma of straw stimulated my appetite, and with one bite, the moist savoriness and roasted fragrance of the bonito filled my mouth. There was none of bonito’s characteristic fishiness, and its freshness really came through. The bowl came with savory miso soup, gently simmered shiitake and kombu, and a small dish of Brussels sprouts, completing a thoughtfully prepared Japanese meal. A restaurant that makes me want to return in another season.
