Dining at Komakata Dojo feels like stepping into living Edo-period history. Founded in 1801, this iconic restaurant has specialized in dozeu—loach fish simmered in a sweet, savory miso broth—for over two centuries, and the experience feels wonderfully timeless. My wife, a friend, and I immediately loved the atmosphere: creaking wooden floors, low beams, tatami seating, and a calm, traditional ambiance. The staff were gracious and attentive, striking a perfect balance between professionalism and warmth. The loach was the highlight of the meal—rich, comforting, and surprisingly approachable, even for first-timers. Served in a shallow iron pan and gently reheated at the table over charcoal, it felt both theatrical and deeply traditional. The sides complemented the dish nicely and rounded out the meal. More than just a restaurant, Komakata Dojo is a cultural experience and a genuine connection to Tokyo’s culinary past. A must-visit for anyone seeking traditional Japanese cuisine and a uniquely memorable dining experience.
View on GoogleHighly recommended for an authentic, old-school Japanese vibe! (If you don't mind trying loach/dojo). It is known as a traditional superfood in Japan, packed with calcium and great for boosting energy! As a Japanese living abroad, this was my first time here, and it was a truly special experience. Even for locals, it’s rare to find such a traditional atmosphere. We enjoyed loach hotpot (Dojo Nabe) and sake. The unique space and tatami-style seating offer a rare, precious glimpse into deep Japanese culture!
View on GoogleVery unique dining experience is one very old setup. The food is something very different where loaches are the staple dish. The taste is kind of weird at first, but after a few bites, it gets tastier, and one begins to enjoy it. The Edo style dining is one that is memorable, and sitting on the floor for the food is not always available.
View on GoogleA fantastic dining experience. We came early at around 5.30 and got right away in. Once seated on the traditional floor sitting the feast began. We loved all the items we had. Nice, fast and friendly service.
View on GooglePlease slow down and enjoy the food provided. ❤️❤️ Follow the rules and respect the local culture. Before writing my comment here, I read some negative reviews. One in particular caught my attention — a reviewer had many unreasonable requests for the restaurant and was disappointed when they were declined. But isn’t it perfectly reasonable for a restaurant to refuse unreasonable demands? Recommend a pot menu 3&4 and deep fried fish, so delicious 🤤 One more time, to anyone interested in coming here: be kind, stay respectful, and take time to understand the local culture. And enjoy your meal here!
