Casual, decades-old eatery specializing in deep-fried tempura shrimp, plus tuna & sea bream sashimi.

This restaurant is an old school family restaurant with a 130 year history of serving tempura. Their portion size is large, and the food is definitely worth the price. The food tastes authentic and is truly rich in flavor. Service was quick and our server was so nice to us, explaining how the whole process works, including how to eat the tempura. This location is cash only, and is definitely worth your next visit!

Reached around 1pm and there is already a queue outside. Waited around 10 mins and we were shown to our seats. Unfortunate for us, they went out of rice when we placed our orders. Had to wait for a while (abt 45mins) before our orders were served. Meanwhile, we were served warm green tea while waiting for our food. We ordered the 4 tempura prawns don. The food came drizzled with their famous black sauce. Savory and not too overly salty. The tempura prawns, the sweet springy rice and the savory black sauce make a good combination for the palate. Would definitely come back again.

I didn’t have faith in any restaurants near a tourist spot, but this one breaks my bias so hard. It is an old school family restaurant with a 130 year history of serving tempura. I ordered a tempura set, which comes with 5 HUGE pieces of tempura, and 2 sides, 1 soup and 1 rice. Their portion is huge, so come hungry. Their tempura does not disappoint. Compared to those light coated ones, those traditional ones are more like heavily coated but they are delicious, I especially enjoy their Aji tempura (saba fish). The restaurant has an retro interior and all waitress are old sister who are clearly on the retiring age but still working. They walk slowly and talk slowly but they present patience and friendliness. Cash only. It is the ultimate Japanese family restaurant vibe and experience!

I had the tempura rice bowl. I think the kakiage (mixed vegetable tempura) is this restaurant's original recipe, but it was a bit of a disappointment; it was very hard and tasted different from the usual kind. The shrimp tempura was delicious, though. Also, please be aware that the prices are very high compared to other restaurants, and the wait times are long.

I headed to Daikokuya Tempura in Asakusa one evening because I’d heard it was one of the go‑to spots for tempura, and it lived up to the reputation. The restaurant has a cozy, traditional feel that matches the classic cuisine it serves. Inside, it’s not very big; more the kind of place where you can hear bowls clinking and tempura sizzling, and you get that satisfying buzz of locals and visitors enjoying their food side by side. The tempura here is what you hope for when you order it in Japan. Each piece arrives hot and light, with a batter that is crisp but not greasy. Prawns are plump and juicy inside, vegetables are tender with a gentle sweetness, and every bite has that airy crunch that makes you want another piece. One thing I really liked was how the tempura didn’t feel heavy or overwhelming, even though the portions are generous. They serve it in the classic way: either over rice in a donburi style or alongside dipping sauce with grated radish. Both options work beautifully. The sauce is savory and well balanced, bringing out the delicate flavors of the seafood and veg without masking them. Adding a little bit of fresh grated ginger or a squeeze of lemon brightens it up perfectly. Service was friendly and attentive. Even when the restaurant filled up during dinner, orders came out steadily and nothing felt rushed. The staff seemed used to helping guests who might be trying tempura for the first time, which made the whole experience smooth and enjoyable. Daikokuya Tempura feels like a comfortable, high‑quality place to enjoy a classic Japanese dish. If you are in Asakusa and craving tempura that is crisp, flavorful, and well executed, this spot delivers without fuss.
