View on GoogleMy spouse and I stopped by on the way back from buying kimchi at a nearby kimchi shop. There are lots of yakiniku restaurants around the kimchi shop, and we thought yakiniku from lunchtime was a bit early, so we looked for Chinese food. When we saw the lunch menu sign on the street, it was cheaper than expected—can you really get lunch at this price in Ueno?—so we went in thinking the portions were probably small. Many people were ordering the black vinegar sweet and sour pork set meal, so I figured it was the most popular item and ordered it. We also ordered mapo fried rice. When the food came, the portions were bigger than expected. There was lots of pork in the sweet and sour pork, and the black vinegar seasoning was really delicious—satisfying. Coming with salad, soup, zha cai, and almond tofu for 950 yen, I was satisfied.
View on GoogleA course packed with dishes I like and dishes I'd been wanting to eat. I went and enjoyed the 3,980円 banquet course, where you can savor 10 dishes in total with 2.5 hours of all-you-can-drink. It started with a platter of 3 kinds of cold appetizers, piled with jellyfish with a perfectly springy-crunchy texture and rich, flavorful char siu, followed by stir-fried tiger prawns in chili sauce—rich and savory, with a lavish presentation that's part of the appeal. Then came the umami-packed stir-fried scallops with chili, where you can taste the sweetness of the scallops in the sauce decorated in a heart shape; karaage bursting with juicy, dripping deliciousness; and spring rolls whose crispy skin gives way to an irresistibly rich flavor that spreads out juicily. Stir-fried beef with black pepper, with a perfect balance of the beef's deep richness and the sharp kick of black pepper—even the cucumber decorated as a heart got me excited. The gyoza, with flavorful juices gushing out from the crispy thin skin, were supremely delicious, and the homemade chili oil was super tasty too—addictively good. The stir-fried squid and vegetables, decorated with cute flowers, is hard to get at home—this deep, rich saltiness with a juicy sweetness in the aftertaste is something you can only get at legit Chinese places, and it's irresistibly delicious. The shark fin soup also had a perfect balance of richness with sweetness in the aftertaste and just the right saltiness; it was loaded with ingredients and very hearty, a really luxurious taste. The shrimp fried rice to finish was lightly seasoned with restrained saltiness, so maybe it's a bit bland compared to the other dishes? That said, it's perfectly tasty, so you'd be fully satisfied eating it as is, but I wanted to have it with my drinks too. So I poured the shark fin soup over the fried rice, like shark fin ankake fried rice? When I tried changing up the flavor… it powered up to a surprisingly delicious level! I might be hooked on eating it this way. I was already pretty full, but it slides right down like ochazuke. The almond tofu for dessert was also rich and really delicious. Classy, legit Chinese food. 3,980円 for this quality is way too good value! It's authentic, legit Chinese food, but apparently they've adapted it to suit Japanese tastes. Pungent or quirky aromas are kept mild, so it's a flavor that absolutely anyone can enjoy. High-end ingredients show up as a matter of course, so looking at just the dishes, you might think for a moment it's not a place you can casually drop by. But the bill is surprisingly reasonable, and the place has a homey atmosphere, a relaxed, unpretentious space. It's a place where you can enjoy high-quality authentic Chinese food casually and at a great price, with really high satisfaction and value.
