A great local sushi spot that’s cheap, fresh, and reasonably tasty. Located in the hectic Ameyoko shopping district, it’s a perfect escape when you need a quick bite amid the crowds. If you come early, just before lunch hour, the restaurant isn’t too packed, so service is fast and efficient. It’s ideal for a no-frills meal when you’re hungry and on the go. There’s also an izakaya upstairs, giving the place a casual neighborhood feel despite being in such a busy area. Overall, a solid choice for a quick, satisfying stop rather than a long dining experience.

View on GoogleBanya Yoichi in Ueno is a cozy and authentic izakaya with a lively and welcoming atmosphere, making it a great spot for both locals and visitors. One of the highlights is the charcoal grilling experience, where you can barbecue food yourself on a small stove filled with charcoal. Watching the flames flare up as the food cooks adds an exciting touch to the meal. The menu also features a good selection of sake to pair with the dishes. Prices are reasonable, and the staff is friendly, though it can get quite busy in the evenings. If you enjoy hands-on grilling and a vibrant izakaya setting, Banya Yoichi is definitely worth a visit.
View on GoogleVisited this unassuming izakaya joint in Apr 2023. We randomly walked in as it was raining, the nearby gyukatsu shop had a super long queue 😂 and we were hungry! Ordered the oysters, nigiri 🍣 set, seafood chirashi rice bowl and chicken wings. Love the vibe here as it really felt like the typical weekday dinner joints that the locals would come to after work. There isn’t an English menu here so be prepared to whip out your google translate. Although there was a language barrier, everyone was really polite as we ‘gestured our way throughout dinner haha.
