Located in the south east corner of 横網町公園 (Yokoami-chō koen) [Park] at the path to the 幽冥鐘と鐘楼 (Yūmei kane to shōrō) The Bell of the Netherworld and the Bell Tower. The park is the site of a fire tornado following the Great Kanto Earthquake (1923) and resulted in 40,000 deaths. Refugees from the earthquake had gathered in the yard of the clothing depot for safety. The 1st of September 2023 at 11:58 AM will mark the 100th anniversary of the destructive natural disasters (earthquake & conflagration) that resulted in the loss of over 100,000, Joshua Hammer's excellent book, "Yokohama Burning: The Deadly 1923 Earthquake and Fire that Helped Forge the Path to World War II", published in 2006, has chapters on the stream of events in Yokohama & Tokyo.
View on GoogleThis is the Yumei Bell and bell tower located near the entrance of Yokoamicho Park in Ryogoku. The "Yumeisho (Yumei Bell)" and the "bell tower" that houses it were donated by the Chinese Buddhist community of the time to commemorate the victims of the Great Kanto Earthquake that struck in 1923 (Taisho 12). Upon receiving the tragic news of the earthquake, Chinese Buddhists and people from all walks of life held a great memorial service for the victims and cast this bell as a bell of mourning to console their spirits and deliver them from suffering. It was later presented to the City of Tokyo in 1925 via the Japan Buddhist Federation. The bell tower from which the bell hangs was designed by architect Dr. Ito Chuta, who also designed the Earthquake Memorial Hall (now the Tokyo Metropolitan Memorial Hall) in the park, and was completed in Showa 5 (1930). It is carefully preserved as a precious monument that conveys to this day the history of Japan and China overcoming deep sorrow, as well as the prayers for international peace and friendship of that era.
