This museum far exceeded my expectations. Even though I do not smoke I thought the tobaco section was by far the most interesting part. It shows tobaco's origins and how it spread as a medicinal plant across the world for hundreds of years. They have a collection of pipes and such that spans across hundreds of years and a hundred countries. This is very much a history museum, anthropology museum, and art museum all at the same time. The salt section was more focused on the science of salt: how we originated from the ocean and that's why we rely on salt, etc, etc. There were some large and interesting salt rocks from across the globe. I would highly recommend this museum. Entry free is 300 yen. Exhibits are in English and Japanese

I stumbled upon this museum quite by chance as it was on my way. A museum dedicated to salt and tobacco really surprised me, as it’s such a niche subject. My curiosity prompted me to pop in, and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. It’s a fairly quiet museum with few visitors, but I found myself getting really engrossed in it; it’s quite fascinating because, in the end, there’s quite a lot to see and learn despite such a niche subject. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit.

The Tobacco and Salt Museum is one of those rare spots in Tokyo that truly surprises you. What sounds like a niche topic turns out to be a beautifully curated and fascinating journey through history, culture, and design. The exhibits go far beyond just tobacco and salt, they explore how these commodities shaped trade, daily life, and even art across different eras and countries. The displays are modern, detailed, and visually engaging. You can tell how much care went into the storytelling and presentation. For all my fellow smokers they also have one of the most fascinating and technological smoking rooms!

Great history of salt in the world. Explains the new methods of harvesting it in Japan. And also showcases all the different uses it has over just food and road. The tobacco part explains, how tobacco got to Japan and has a nice collection of smoking paraphernalia and a collection of cigarette packs from all around the world. Air conditioned, clean bathrooms.

I was a little disappointed with this museum. I was hoping for a more interactive or demonstrative museum. There was almost no interaction in this museum. I thought it would have been interesting to see a demonstration of how one of the tobacco cutting machines worked or a working demonstration of salt concentration/extraction. There wasn’t in this museum that you couldn’t read or watch online. The museum also fails to talk about the harmful aspects of tobacco. But I guess that is to be expected since the museum is owned by Japan Tobacco. While many of the signs had English, not all did and when they did they were often much less descriptive than the Japanese.
