If you want to see the masterpiece, be sure to check the exhibition schedule beforehand, as it isn't always included in the permanent collection. That said, it is absolutely worth a visit! You'll discover the incredible impact Katsushika Hokusai 葛飾北齋had on various Japanese industries, which widely adopted his drawing guidebooks. It makes for a fascinating learning experience. I was also deeply impressed by the artwork of his daughter, Katsushika Ōi 葛飾應為, even though the museum only displays reproductions rather than her original pieces 🥲. Overall, it's a truly meaningful experience to explore the life and artistic history of this pioneering master.

I found The Sumida Hokusai Museum well worth the stop, but it definitely helps to check the exhibition schedule first if you’re hoping to see a particular highlight. The permanent collection still gives a solid look at Hokusai’s work, and the museum itself makes for a very worthwhile visit overall. I’d plan ahead a little, then enjoy the rest of the experience.

Well, it’s worth a visit, but be aware that no photos are allowed inside. In reality, though, you can find most of the works online (either to buy or download). There’s an enormous number of sketches — be prepared. There are also some interactive screens with more details about the exhibits. I was a bit surprised there wasn’t an option to create your own layered “stamp” like at Tokyo National Museum.

Not huge, but a good collection of Hokusai and Hiroshige prints. And a history of his career and ukiyo-e. Building is architecture adventurous, at the expense of internal space. Not too crowded, even on a Sunday. Plenty of explanations in English.

I bought my ticket at the museum counter with no wait. Pros: human size museum, you won’t feel overwhelmed by multiple halls, the current exhibition focuses on the 36 views on Mount Fuji series definitely giving you the best perspective of the artist artwork. Cons: hard to navigate, very low indication of context, descriptions of artworks most in only Japanese (about 10-20% max was translated in English). No AC on 3rd floor.. I come from a hot country nevertheless this was a challenge, hard to breath inside the exhibition room, very challenging for elderly. Take a small fan with you eventually. For such a big artist, it feels the museum could be significantly improved and better managed.
