After walking around the Sumida Walk, I decided to visit this museum. Only ¥100 and you can learn a bit history of Sumida. Unfortunately, the museum contents only written in Japanese and you can’t take any documentation either. It might be hard for foreigners to understand the museum contents without a proper guide. Bring someone who understands Japanese and could explain them to you or use translation app to take pic and translate for you.

The small pamphlet for foreigners was informative but I wish I could read each plaque at the exhibition - everything was very interesting, however, and a nice reminder of the Sumida area history

I visited to coincide with the special New Year event. Inside, in addition to the permanent exhibition where you can learn about "The History and Culture of the Sumida River", there were tons of New Year-only performances, which surprised me. In particular, the street performances like "Gama no Abura Uri" and "Harukoma" by Asakusa Zatsugeidan were wonderful, with the performers' patter and movements making you feel like you'd slipped back in time to the Edo period. I could also hear live koto, shakuhachi, and shamisen performances up close, so it was a truly luxurious time. On top of that, the warm hospitality, like candy craft (amezaiku) ema plaques depicting the "Horse", the zodiac sign for 2026, was lovely. It's a valuable museum where you can not only learn history but also experience traditional performing arts firsthand.
