The Mapo tofu, Yaki niku and Motsu nikomi are definitely the highlights of this izakaya. Other than that the drinks are good at prices you’d expect anywhere in Tokyo.

The 5-skewer assorted kushiyaki platter seasoned with salt and a Hoppy set are a reliable choice. Japanese sake and seasonal drinks are also available. The gyoza are outstanding. The Mapo tofu is spicy and delicious too. The motsu nikomi also stays true to the basics. The stewed tail has quite a strong spicy kick. Once you've finished the meat on the tail bones, add a salted rice ball to the remaining soup to make it zosui-style, and you can enjoy every last bit. Overall, it's reasonably priced, so I think around 2000円 per person is enough to have a really satisfying time. The cigarette smell that's so typical of Kinshicho is unavoidable, but I do wish they'd separate the smoking and non-smoking areas.

Having drinks at まる大本舗 near Kinshicho Station in Sumida, Tokyo. Draft beer@400円, senmai sashimi@480円. 5 yakitori skewers for 750円, etc. It's really handy that there are so many places around here for a quick drink. The senmai sashimi has a crunchy, chewy texture and tastes great. I love senmai sashimi and sometimes get off the train here just for it, but I wish it were a little cheaper (though really, I just drink too much).
