A small wooden counter restaurant a couple of minutes from Higashi-Koenji subway station where you can watch your pork be breaded and fried. The amazing thing about Tonki is how consistently excellent the pork is.
View on GoogleStar 4.1 :) Went here for lunch. Reasonable price, tasty Tonkatsu and very kind staff. Tonkatsu was kind of softly crunchy compare to other Tonkatau I had in Tokyo.
View on GoogleI dropped in on a whim after a concert. Unusually for a tonkatsu place, there were lots of plain wood counter seats and two four-person tables at the back, so I sat at a table. I ordered the hirekatsu set meal for 2,000円, and a thick, crispy, very delicious hirekatsu arrived. It was expertly fried and not greasy at all, which made me wonder if I should have gone for the rosu instead. The tonjiru that came with the set was delicious too, and I was very satisfied. It's a good place.
View on GoogleAbout 3 minutes from Higashi-Koenji Station. A tonkatsu place along Ome Kaido. It seems to be in the lineage of the famous 「とんき」 in Meguro. The interior has counter and table seating, with over 15 counter seats and two tables for 4, making it more spacious than expected. I visited for lunch this time. Both hire and rosu lunches are 1450円 (with rice, miso soup, a small side dish, and pickles). I ordered the hire, which arrived in about 10 minutes. The coating was crispy with a satisfying crunch. The meat released juicy savory flavor when chewed—so delicious! You can get cabbage refills, so you can eat plenty of vegetables while enjoying the meat. The hire portion felt a little small, so I'd like to try the rosu next time.
View on GoogleA tonkatsu place in the Higashi-Koenji area. It seems to be loved by locals, and I saw many people leisurely enjoying their meals. I also saw a review saying the place was dirty. Sure, from outside it looks like a typical local set-meal place, but inside it's refined, with a beautiful wooden counter arranged around a spacious kitchen. The two or so tables are kept clean too. There are no TVs or magazines like at cluttered neighborhood diners, and I felt no dirtiness that interfered with enjoying my meal. If anything, I sensed the owner's professionalism. Now, what I had this time was the rosukatsu set meal with a large serving of rice. (1350円+大盛50円) Compared with tonkatsu at ordinary places, the coating here is thicker, and “crackly” would be more accurate than “lightly crispy.” It was a type I'd personally never had before. According to the owner, the breadcrumbs are finer than usual. You can also choose a small side dish. This time it was kinpira gobo or potato salad, and I had the potato salad. The accompanying miso soup contains tonkatsu trimmings, so it tastes more like tonjiru than miso soup. And the amount of rice is hard to believe for just +50円 for a large serving. Apparently cabbage refills are unlimited too. I think the value for money is very good. Good food, good value, a clean restaurant, and a pleasant owner—it was a really good place. I'll visit again.
