I wondered what a "local history materials room" was, as opposed to a local history museum, so I came to see. When I arrived it was an ordinary elementary school, which confused me a bit, but there was a Yuyu House usage guide posted at the school gate, and at the very bottom it said "A local history materials exhibition room is attached." If you tell them over the intercom that you'd like to see the exhibition room, they'll unlock the side door so you can go in. Once on the grounds, there's a green-paved path; follow it and you'll see the entrance on the second floor of the pink building at the back on the right. Inside the entrance there's an information counter on the left, and when I called out, a staff member guided me to the exhibition room. The exhibition room is about the size of one slightly large classroom, but the displays are very authentic and well worth seeing. Viewed from the entrance, on the right side of the room is a recreated Showa-era house with lots of nostalgic everyday goods on display. At the back center there are toys and books you can actually play with, and on the left are rare toys, replica models of school lunches from back then, and other local history materials; the illustrations on the explanation panels use artwork by Saigan Ryohei. It seems to be a facility related to Suginami's local history museum, so you can see very high-quality exhibits. When leaving, there's an unlock button in a slightly hard-to-see spot on the left side of the door; press it to exit the grounds. The access is inconvenient and, given the volume of exhibits, I can't strongly recommend it, but for people who live nearby, it's a facility I'd like you to visit at least once with your kids.
