Update With the coronavirus situation settling down, evening service has resumed too. That's a help. The menu has also been updated, so I'm posting it here. The lunch menu has hearty options such as tonkatsu and ginger pork. There are 3 tables seating 4, 1 table seating 2, and a tatami seating area in the back. It gets fairly busy at lunch. You can have set meals in the evening too, but there are also various dishes to go with drinks. Apparently it used to be a Chinese restaurant, and the simple gyoza are delicious. The interior has a Showa-era feel, somehow like relaxing in the kitchen at your parents' house. The lady who owns the place does all the cooking herself, both lunch and dinner.

Visited for lunch. The shop is on the old section of Kanpachi, about an 8-minute walk from Takaido Station. The menu board outside drew me in. There are four tables seating 4. It's a small place. There are 10 lunch options. Apart from the salt-grilled mackerel, the menu is pretty heavy. I was going to get the menchi katsu set, but I was curious about the curry, so I ordered menchi curry. The plate arrived after a short wait. I finished the small salad first, then dug into the menchi curry. The menchi was juicy and seemed homemade. The curry wasn't very spicy, probably suited to most people. Maybe I should have had the menchi as a set meal.

I wandered in while looking around for somewhere to have dinner. Apparently it gets super busy at lunchtime, but there were no customers when I went in, so I was a little worried (did I pick the wrong place?) lol Does the motherly owner run it all herself? Apparently it's been going for nearly 40 years. I ordered the ginger pork set and a salad. The flavor was bold. Maybe a little strong? Really makes you eat more rice. I struggle to find places for dinner, so I hope restaurants like this keep going for a long time.

Work was piling up, so dinner was a little late. A set-meal place near the office. Gyoza, meat and liver, menchi katsu. A hearty weekend meal. A nice place where the regulars gather. Smoking allowed.

『居食家 喜代司』 is just down a side street off Itsukaichi Kaido, heading toward Hamadayama from Kanpachi. At lunchtime they offer a little under 10 menu items. Starting at around 900円, they have the usual set-meal options like grilled fish and ginger pork!
