At 1:30 in the morning, I slipped into 福しん in Asagaya Pearl Center as the third and final stop of a night of bar-hopping. With last orders at 1:45, I barely made it, and just being able to eat something warm at that hour made it a welcome presence. I ordered double-vegetable tanmen and a half portion of fried rice. I was already close to my stomach's limit, but somehow finished everything. The tanmen was packed with vegetables, including celery and bamboo shoots, and doubling them makes for quite a substantial serving. The flavor was, for better or worse, “quintessential chain restaurant.” It's in a similar price range and position to 日高屋, with straightforward flavors that appeal to everyone. It wasn't a revelation, but there's reassurance in knowing that being able to eat this much at that hour is enough. The interior is bright and clean, with an atmosphere that makes it easy to enter alone even late at night. Service was neither good nor bad, and the food arrived quickly after ordering, which is welcome when you're hungry. Given the late hour, I had the place to myself that day. It's worth keeping in mind as an option for a final meal after drinking or a light late-night bite.
View on GoogleBack when I lived near Ikebukuro, I used to love going to 福しん. It was that delicious, and I loved it. It's been decades since I moved away, but every so often I'd remember 福しん and think how much I'd like to eat there again. I went to Asagaya for a small errand. And there was 福しん! Of course, I went straight in, excited. Hmm, set B? Set A? Do they still have those… No, since I'm here, I'll have the liver and chive stir-fry on its own, fried rice and ramen, and 🍺beer too, since it's hot today. 🍺The beer was fine. The fried rice was about what you'd expect. The liver and chives were super oily and greasy, but not bad. The problem was the ramen, which used to be the simplest and most delicious… it tasted awful. The noodles weren't curly anymore and had lost their smoothness going down. Yet they're still advertised as hand-kneaded. And the broth tasted awful, like nothing but hot water mixed with soy sauce…. Both tasted so bad that after about 3 slurps I wanted to leave the rest. I've never felt this way in my life. 福しん, forever
View on GoogleThere are many chain restaurants near Asagaya Station, including 日高屋 and 中華一番 (京都王将 has closed). One of them, “福しん,” is a chain that originated in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. Its Asagaya Pearl Center branch is inside the arcade. Classic dishes such as fried rice and gyoza are reasonably priced and consistently tasty. The summer-only hiyashi chuka is distinctive, with green noodles made using seaweed from Ishigaki Island.

View on GoogleOctober 2025 review update I had double-vegetable tanmen (fewer noodles) to get some vegetables. It really is warming and nice. I wish they had a no-noodle option on the menu too! It was delicious! July 2025 initial review I stopped by on my way back from Asagaya Loft. Double-vegetable tanmen (fewer noodles) and gyoza! Piping hot and delicious!
