The food is cheap and surprisingly delicious. It’s run by an elderly couple who cook everything fresh, so the wait can be a bit longer — but it’s definitely worth it. If you don’t live nearby, you probably wouldn’t even notice this place. I just wish they could open during dinner hours too.

Tanmen 600円 Large portion 100円 藤野家 杉並区成田東5-15-22 My first noodle visit, around 12:20. A neighborhood Chinese restaurant facing Ome Kaido. It really shows its age. A place I'd been curious about whenever I passed by. No other customers were there. I went in because they had tanmen. The bowl arrived within a few minutes. The noodles are boiled in a large pot, so even the large portion doesn't clump together. I asked for firm noodles. The soup is soy-sauce-based. A very delicious Chinese soup, really well executed! With soup like this, you can imagine the other noodle dishes would be good too. Plenty of vegetables as well. My first experience of green peppers in tanmen. ^ - ^ Probably the same ingredients as their stir-fried vegetables.(^^) Good value, delicious, and satisfying.

This set-meal restaurant is along Ome Kaido, roughly halfway between Ogikubo Station and Minami-Asagaya Station, so people who don't live nearby probably rarely make it here. The storefront looks steeped in history, and understandably so: there's talk that it was founded in the first year of the Showa era. If so, it's approaching 100 years, quite a noteworthy presence. The menu has plenty of set meals, making it rewarding to choose. Today I tried the chahan and yakiniku. Rather than Chinese-restaurant fried rice, this set-meal restaurant's chahan feels more like homestyle fried rice, paired with yakiniku resembling stir-fried meat and vegetables. A good combination. There was a vacancy notice posted at the entrance, but what does rent of 3万円 mean in this day and age? A lovely place that gives you the illusion that this spot alone has slipped back in time.

A Chinese restaurant about a 9-minute walk from Ogikubo Station. It looks a little intimidating to enter, but the friendly welcome inside puts you at ease. Almost everything costs under 1000円, making it easy on the wallet despite the recent wave of price increases. The yakiniku set meal is delicious, with the vegetables cooked just right to retain their texture while bringing out their sweetness. I like the omurice, with its substantial chicken rice. Cash payment only. I'd like to go again.

It felt like the quintessential local set-meal restaurant. It seemed to be run by 2 people, the owner and perhaps his wife? If it were near my home, I think I'd go often. It was very delicious. No parking.
