This is one of the places that Shinjuku City plans and supports, exhibiting and opening to the public cultural properties, historic sites, and the workplaces of craftspeople carrying on traditional industries in the ward as “Mini Museums.” Although it's called a museum, it's the workshop of Takeshi Ishida, third generation of Ishida Shoten, maker of tsumami kanzashi, and the entrance serves as the exhibition space. It's open on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and Ishida-san took a break from work to come out and explain things in detail, which made me feel quite humbled. Apparently there are only about 10 makers left nationwide. I hope this delicate Japanese beauty will be passed down.
View on GoogleWhen you visit, the craftsman Ishida-san personally explains things carefully. There are only about 10 pieces displayed at the entrance, but it's a lot of fun. There's a stamp too. However, the map in the pamphlet distributed by Shinjuku City is way too rough. So I got lost (sweat) Once you know where it is, though, it's no big deal to find.
View on GoogleIt's on the 4th floor of an ordinary apartment building, and I was shown the works displayed at the entrance. I make them as a hobby, and it was very educational.
View on GoogleIt's basically a few kanzashi at the entrance of a unit in an ordinary apartment building. Not really enough to call it a museum.. No need to make it a destination on purpose.
View on GoogleIt's small, but elegant and enjoyable.
