Founded in 1945 (Showa 20) in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Later, in 1964 (Showa 39), the year of the Tokyo Olympics, this traditional coffeehouse opened in 『思い出横丁』 by Shinjuku’s west exit. Following renovation in 1987 (Showa 62), it has nurtured its history and traditions for over 80 years. A craftsperson with over 30 years of experience carefully selects green coffee beans from around the world, which are slowly and meticulously roasted in-house in a direct-fire roaster. Our carefully prepared cloth-filter coffee is served in luxurious cups & saucers collected from countries worldwide. Enjoy “a moment for adults, a connoisseur’s taste” in an interior inspired by Taisho romanticism.…

The Global Coffee Edit: Showa-Era Sophistication at Tajimaya Coffee, Shinjuku As an editor who has scouted the best cafes from Paris to Seoul, I don't say this lightly: Tajimaya Coffee (Main Store) has officially secured a spot on my list of top coffee destinations worldwide. It is a masterclass in the "Kissaten" (traditional Japanese coffee house) aesthetic—a moody, dark-wood sanctuary that feels worlds away from the neon pulse of Shinjuku. The Aesthetic: A Study in Vintage Luxury The interior is an absolute dream for anyone with a "dark academia" or vintage-lifestyle palette. The space is adorned with rich dark wood and an intimate atmosphere that invites slow living. The signature "editorial" touch? No two guests are served alike. Each coffee arrives in a bespoke, unique set of vintage porcelain cups and saucers, turning a simple caffeine fix into a highly curated visual experience. The Curation: Coffee & Morning Fare >> The Brew: The selection is impressively deep, catering to both the casual drinker and the serious connoisseur. >> The Morning Edit: We arrived just before 11 AM, and the breakfast dishes were the perfect balance of comfort and quality—substantial enough to fuel a day of Shinjuku exploration but refined in presentation. >> The "Insider" Timing: By arriving early, we found ourselves in a rare "private" setting. Having the space to ourselves meant we could capture the architecture and design details freely without the usual Tokyo crowds. The Location: A Hidden Sanctuary Its location is its best-kept secret. Situated just off the famous Memory Lane (Omoide Yokocho), it offers a startling contrast to the gritty, bustling alleyway next door. It’s the perfect "reset" spot—quiet, professional, and incredibly welcoming. The Verdict Tajimaya is where heritage meets high-end hospitality. Whether you're here for the artisan coffee or the quiet, wood-paneled "vibe," it is a non-negotiable stop for any discerning traveler’s itinerary.

I liked the atmosphere of this vintage coffee shop even though it has a strong cigarette smell. It actually reminds me that indoor smoking was allowed in the 70s and 80s in Japan. The vibe of the shop is really great, as if you are in a coffee shop from the 70s. The coffee tastes great too. I would definitely visit again if I come back to Tokyo.

A coffee shop shaped by time. Tajimaya Coffee Main Store has long been part of Shinjuku’s kissaten culture—spaces where coffee is treated less as speed and more as atmosphere. Wood, dim lighting, quiet intervals between conversations. The pace changes once you sit down. This time, we ordered the cake set featuring a traditional dorayaki made by Tokiya, a long-established confectionery shop in Shinjuku. The dorayaki carries a custom Tajimaya branding, served with fresh cream on the side for a gradual change in flavor. Sweetness, bitterness, texture, temperature. Nothing overly dramatic, just carefully balanced. A place where coffee becomes part of how time is experienced. Part of how we read Shinjuku.

Absolutely stunning coffee shop that you have to visit if you’re in the area. Located in a busy district, once you enter you feel as if you were transported decades into the past. Like stepping back into a warm hug and being greeted with a delicious hot coffee and breakfast. The decor is tasteful and the wooden interior is stunning. Even the utensils were beautiful and felt well-loved. I like how the menu had a guide on their beans’ flavor profile. We got the geisha and it was lovely! The apple pie was tasty too! Definitely come here if you want a quiet and thoughtful experience.

Amazing little coffee shop. The size of the shop is very small, but the atmosphere is retro and authentic. Coffee was fantastic! I got decafe, and it was great! Must recommend the coffee jelly. Apple pie was okay... it was more like an apple cake than a pie. Definitely put this on your radar!
