Observation deck

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building South Observation Deck is a free observation deck (202 meters above ground) in Shinjuku. During the day you can see Mount Fuji and the cluster of buildings in central Tokyo, and enjoy different views depending on the time of day. There is a street piano inside that anyone is welcome to play. Located within walking distance of Shinjuku Station, it is widely used both for sightseeing and as a place for Tokyo residents to relax. At the Tomin Plaza (Citizens' Plaza) on the 1st floor you can relax on the lawn, and many people visit it together with the observation deck. At night, from the Tomin Plaza you can watch projection mapping displayed on the exterior walls of the Main Building No. 1, and we also recommend visiting it as a set with the observation deck.

One of the best free attractions in Shinjuku! Standing high above the city, it offers breathtaking 360 degree views of Tokyo's sprawling skyline, and on clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji. While it is located on the west side of Shinjuku Station a bit away from the main tourist and shopping areas the walk is easy, safe, and straightforward. The deck is fast to access, well-maintained, and features a souvenir shop and café. The incredible city views at zero cost make it a fantastic and highly rewarding stop on any Tokyo itinerary!

It's FREE! You get some of the best views of Tokyo when you're up there! We went on a Friday evening & stood in line before there was a bag check then we took the elevator up to the observation deck. We took some amazing pictures of the skyline and the lights of the city! There is a piano in the middle of the space & a cafe too where I bought a beautiful wooden fridge magnet & a special name stamp (in Japanese) as a gift for my daughter's class teacher. Back to the piano, the pianists appeared to be amateurs who stood in line to play for the crowd, & they played the piano beautifully! The ambience at the observation deck was just wonderful with the music & the view. After spending about 20 minutes there we stood in line to take the elevator down. Now wait, don't just leave when you reach the bottom... In the evening there is a light & music show featured ON the building & you're able to relax & view this outside on a patch of grass. Just enjoy the show before you take a long walk towards the train station.

We lucked out when we learned that this building was a block away from our hotel. They have two observation decks - one in the south tower and one in the north town. It is absolutely FREE to visit them. They are located on the 45th floor. They have large windows where photos of the surrounding areas can be taken. There's also a nice souvenir shop in the middle of the floor. Additionally they have the Tokyo Night and Light Show in the evening which runs from about 6 to 9. It is projected onto the twin-towered building at 30 minute intervals and can be seen from across the street.

No idea why Google Maps is asking about buying tickets, since I've never run into that. For the waiting time question I answered about the elevator wait, but I just barely missed one. I heard the South Tower has a piano so I wanted to see it, because maybe I've only been in the North Tower (including last week). Interesting music from the yellow and black piano, though perhaps slightly discordant. Once again I failed to see Mount Fuji. I've heard that takes some luck to catch a clear day these years. Wi-Fi works fine. Not sure what to say about the capacity, but there are six tables with 4 seats in this section and six benches that I can see. I went ahead and had a cup of coffee and did a bit of study while I was there. Pretty good coffee and I'll call it a high four stars overall on the rarefied atmosphere.

This should be an absolutely must-go on everyone's list when visiting Tokyo. Not only is it completely free and offers excellent panoramic views, the cafe and the gift shop is amazon! The suvenirs and gift options are unique, high quality and much much better than buying from stores like Donki. And best part is the prices are extremely reasonable!
